Re: 8 gig enough?
I have the 16gb and so far it's plenty of space. But I do have a lot of stuff in the cloud.

Re: 8 gig enough?
I've got the 8gb version and have been using my n7 just about everyday since mid July.
Since then, I just counted and I have downloaded 112 apps on my N7 and that doesn't include the Google apps and apps that came preloaded. And currently I have 3.8gb available space.
I use Google play music and have all of my music in the cloud. And use dropbox and Google drive for extra storage.
I don't know how I have so much space left but the n7 is very good at managing data

Re: 8 gig enough?
It seems crazy to me to pay 50 dollars for an extra 8GB on a device that supports USB OTG.

Re: 8 gig enough?
I download a few gameloft apps and that pretty much filled my nexus 7. Nova 3 comes in at 1.6gb alone. The games are awesome and look great on the n7 but i wish i got a 16 since i mostly use it for games.

Re: 8 gig enough?
Hi! It was useful to read all your comments but I am still unsure of which model should I buy.
Even though I do not want to run out of space, I plan to use the Nexus 7 mainly at home, where I have a spatious NAS from where I will stream all my music and videos. I will mainly use the device for quickly browsing the web, checking my NAS, reading, streaming pictures and movies, controlling devices. And also I plan to install apps for my kids.
So, my main concern is whether storage will be enough for apps. I also plan to play some games, since the device seems powerful, but I do not believe that I will download every graphic intensive game that is available. Actually, since I was a kid in the eighties, I will be more than satisfied by installing Mame4droid and a few roms.
I already own an 8GB Ipod touch and, even though I have almost all my music there, I had managed to also install quite a few apps. So, that's why I'm guessing that the 8GB version of the Nexus 7 should be fine.
Moreover, I learnt that there are other devices that can expand the storage of this device without having to attach any cable, such as the Seagate GoFlex Satellite Wireless hard drive, which costs $ 199 and sports 500GB, and can serve up to 3 devices at the same time. It also includes a car charger and it is battery powered. So is it worth to pay $ 50 for an extra 8GB? I could have my kids entire movie collection inside this thing and they could even watch different movies at the same time while we travel (if we had more than one tablet, of course).
So, do you believe I should be fine with the 8GB version? - 09-20-2012, 08:27 AM #56
Re: 8 gig enough?
FYI. When you get to about 500mb space left, you can't load any more apps or anything. That is used by the OS for it's purposes. The thing will slow to a crawl and die if you do. Constant warnings, etc. etc. Remember, you don't start with 8GB. With the OS and bloatware you start about 4.5 gb. I have 3-4 games on mine that are over 500mb, with a Titanium backup and one nandroid backup, that uses another 2GB, approximately.
Do the math. Spend the extra $50 bucks, get the 16GB, you won't regret it.
That's my final say on it. If you get the 8GB, you are going to be very limited. Hopefully you won't post here later complaining.Maxwell was the 1st "Smart" phone user...... - 09-20-2012, 06:17 PM #57

Re: 8 gig enough?
That's still a matter of preference & opinion. If the 16gb meets the needs, it's VERY nice not to have to carry anything else. On the other hand, if the $50 is a lot of money to the buyer, then the USB OTG can be a nice "plan B". I might look into using it for music on road trips, since I never know what I'll be in the mood for and would like to have much or all of my music with me. Many road trips are through mountains, etc, so streaming doesn't work, even with tethering. But for the most part I prefer my N7 to be very minimalistic, so carrying a storage device in addition to the tablet is a big turn-off for daily use. I just checked, and my 16gb tablet has 9gb free, so I'd be on the cusp of running out of space with the 8gb model, and that's with zero music or video on the device.
Value is subjective - for me, the extra $50 was worth it. - 09-20-2012, 06:52 PM #59

Re: 8 gig enough?
The industry in general is moving away from 8gb devices.

Re: 8 gig enough?
Having had the device for some time since I originally posted, I'll say two things:
1. 8GB still would have been enough, since the device is used mostly at home while I'm in WiFi range, so all streaming media is stored on my home file server, and 8GB is plenty for all the apps I've loaded.
2. I don't regret buying the 16GB one bit. With 16, there's always that little bit extra when you need it.
Then again, I waited for the Nexus 7 for a long time - something with this much power at this price point, and as a result the $50 difference in price was pretty much meaningless to me. I wanted to future-proof my device a bit and make sure that I could use it in the future for things I cannot anticipate today, so I bought the 16GB. Chances are, 8GB of that memory will never be exercised when I decommission the device a few years hence. Honestly don't care - it's there if I need it and I have the money to afford it. I'd hate to want to load all my documentation for all the various systems I support at work and find out that I'm 1GB short or something, if I ever decide to do something like that. I'd hate to go on an extended road trip without WiFi and find that I'm 2GB too low to hold a movie that would have made the flight more tolerable. And I'd hate to have to live permanently with an external USB dongle to get more memory to the thing.
If I wanted infinitely expandable memory, I would have shelled out for the Galaxy Tab or something. - 09-21-2012, 05:44 PM #63

Reply
I only carry my USB dongle when I'm going on a trip and want my movie collection (3 terabytes spread out over a hand full of 250GB flash drives).
