7" Galay Tab or 16 GB Nexus 7?
I'll be a first time tablet owner and am looking for good advice. I've sort of narrowed my choices to these 2 tablets. I like how the Galaxy has expandable memory, but I like the power plant nder the hood of the Nexus 7.
16 GB isn't a whole lot. I'm already up there on my Galaxy Nexus. I don't mind ICS; I'm rooted with GB on my GNex. I suppose my main question is if anyone has had a bad Galaxy Tab experience?Pure mathematics is the only truth in our world. - 08-02-2012, 07:15 AM #2
Re: 7" Galay Tab or 16 GB Nexus 7?
IMO I think with the Nexus its time to look into cloud storage. I use it now with dropbox and have no issues.
If people are worried about security then just don't put up anything of value(Movies, songs, etc)
16gb is enough for me though I find. I have like 2 pages full of apps now, a bunch of songs, a few shows, and a few movies.
When I need space I just remove a movie I watched or some episodes of a show.First time Android user coming from iOS. Owner of a Nexus 7 - 08-02-2012, 12:42 PM #3
Re: 7" Galay Tab or 16 GB Nexus 7?
I've narrowed my choices down to Blackberry PB vs Nexus 7. Just waiting a couple of weeks to see if RIM launches a update for the PB.
As for Samsung Galaxy vs Nexus, Nexus 7 hands down. Even though Galaxy has the Sd slot, you cannot store apps on it. So what's the point of more storage? And I've played with it, and it just doesnt look that appealing for some reason. the UI needs a facelift. - 08-02-2012, 12:44 PM #4
Re: 7" Galay Tab or 16 GB Nexus 7?
Dude.... just no.
My girlfriend has a playbook and I have a Nexus 7 and they are night and day different.
I want RIM to be successful as I have friends that work for them and they are Canadian company, but my god that tablet is terrible if you care about apps. In my opinion if a tablet does not have Netflix or Skype its not worth getting.
But just overall Nexus 7 is night and day better. So much faster like literally butter smooth. The Playbook lags at times and sites are slow as molasses going uphill on a cold winters day.
I posted in the Playbook section, but if you can get android on the Playbook it might be worth it. Do you know if you can?First time Android user coming from iOS. Owner of a Nexus 7Thanked by: - 08-02-2012, 12:47 PM #5

Re: 7" Galay Tab or 16 GB Nexus 7?
You don't mind ICS now. But do you mind having it forever? Because Samsung is pretty freaking bad at updates, even worse with tablets so far.
To me the best thing about the Nexus isn't the hardware (and the hardware is real sweet), it's that it's a "Nexus", it'll stay current with the latest versions of Android for probably as long as you'll use the tablet.
Jelly Bean is a pretty nice update, and who knows how awesome Keylime Pie will be. Things you might miss out on with most tablets you buy today other than the Nexus 7. - 08-02-2012, 01:33 PM #7
Re: 7" Galay Tab or 16 GB Nexus 7?
+1 to the that. I have the PlayBook and just side loaded Kindle on it. It will run the Android apps that the developers choose to create for the PB. It's a simple process so I don't know why more developers don't do it.
If someone has a BB phone, then BB Bridge with the PlayBook is great and the two just go together. But in the end, it's the lack of apps that keeps my PlayBook sitting in the drawer doing nothing.

Re: 7" Galay Tab or 16 GB Nexus 7?
Yeah, Kindle for Android. In the beginning, Amazon said they were going to make a version for the PlayBook. Then they released the Fire and decided not to.
Here's the link on how to do it
It's pretty easy and works great.Thanked by: - 08-02-2012, 01:48 PM #10

Re: 7" Galay Tab or 16 GB Nexus 7?
The Kindle is just a reader, but the Kindle Fire is a reader/media consumption device. It runs Android (Gingerbread) but is heavily skinned. You get access to the Amazon app store, but not Google Play. It's pretty much a portal to all things Amazon. That's what makes the Nexus 7 so desirable for the same price; you are free to do what you want and not locked into an ecosystem.

Re: 7" Galay Tab or 16 GB Nexus 7?
Just read this. Unrelated
Research in Motion unveiled a mobile version of its PlayBook tablet in Canada as the struggling BlackBerry maker looked to gain footing in the fast-growing market.
The company, whose sales of 260,000 tablets in the past quarter left it far behind the leaders, said the new 4G version would be available in Canada on August 9 and in other markets in the coming months.
"We're excited to bring customers the first BlackBerry PlayBook tablet with support for 4G LTE networks," said David Smith, executive vice president for mobile computing.
"The new 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook offers a broad range of premium features, including a stunning seven-inch display, front and rear facing HD video cameras... it also offers premium performance on high speed cellular networks, helping customers to be more productive than ever and to make the most of their time on the go."
RIM in June offered up a grim quarterly report showing deepening losses and worsening sales, as it announced 5,000 job cuts and a delay in its new smartphone platform.
The company, which has been hammered in the rapidly changing market now dominated by makers of devices using Google's Android software and Apple's iPhone, said it would cut jobs to boost efficiency and save $1 billion in operating costs.
The company delayed its new BlackBerry 10 platform, which had been expected later this year in an effort to drive sales in the key holiday season. The new platform is widely seen as the last chance for BlackBerry to regain traction in the marketplace.First time Android user coming from iOS. Owner of a Nexus 7 - 08-02-2012, 02:09 PM #15

Re: 7" Galay Tab or 16 GB Nexus 7?
Just to clarify a few things or at least add my thoughs
1- The Kindle Fire supports both Netflix and Hulu Plus, very well even
2- Kindle Fire OS is elegant, but unchangeable. It's very easy to use. I like it quite a bit actually and I own a Nexus 7. It's not too hard to change though. That's another story and I'll save it unless you want to know.
3- While I like my Kindle Fire Ravy has a point about the timing. Wait a month and see what Amazon does to refresh it. Then decide. If you don't want to wait, get the Nexus and be safe. Otherwise hunt for a deal on the Fire, which does happen from time to time. - 08-02-2012, 03:19 PM #19
Re: 7" Galay Tab or 16 GB Nexus 7?
The Galaxy tab 2 screen is going to be a major let down for you compared to the Galaxy Nexus. The pixels really got to me. Its not that bad...just bad compared to the GN
The Nexus 7 is still not the same as the GN screen res...but better than the GT2
Also.. if you are going to get the Tab... but it from Walmart this week so you get the $249 and $50 gift card - 08-02-2012, 03:22 PM #20
Re: 7" Galay Tab or 16 GB Nexus 7?
Speaking of Wal-Mart, make sure to check prices. In the Sunday flyer, they had a Nexus 7 for 249.00 and you get the $50.00 Wal-Mart card. I was ready to return mine to Staples and go to Wal-Mart when I noticed it was the 8GB version. All they did was jack the price up 50 bucks, so it's not really a deal at all.

I'm trying to make the same choice, and while I like the specs of the Nexus 7, I don't have the time or patience to keep exchanging devices until I get a good one, and even if i do get a "good" one, then i would worry that the glue is going to come undone on the left hand side of the screen. Im not gaming or doing anything intensive, so for me, the quad core is not a big advantage. My use will be for browsing, email, calendar, and occasionally reading news articles. If you have a Microcenter near you, they have the Samsung galaxy tab 2 7 on sale for 199. I'm still undecided and waiting to see if the situation improves for the Nexus 7. I also had the Asus Transformer Prime, returned it, and the situation never improved IMHO. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I just sold my Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus to get Nexus. Definitely get the Nexus 7.
Along with the obvious, the Galaxy was laggy in comparison, and did stuff like completely screw up your Picasa galleries. It would turn every single Google+ post into a separate album instead of putting them all into the Posts album. Stupid TouchWiz.
And if you put it into Airplane Mode, the email program would continue to try to collect from all of your accounts and then pop up a warning message every 30 seconds (over top of whatever you are doing) telling you it can't contact the server. Only way to stop it was to reset the device.
The proprietary charging cable was a PITA too.
And I doubt it will see JB any time soon if at all.

Re: 7" Galay Tab or 16 GB Nexus 7?
The wife has a Galaxy Tab 7. My Nexus 7 arrives on Wednesday. I chose the Nexus because it will always get the latest OS updates that Samsung won't. Additionally, once rooted, the Nexus 7 can use a thumb drive as an external drive to hold movies, music, etc. I don't need a rear-facing camera, (I've got a smartphone) and I really don't anticipate listening to music without headphones through any tablet. So while both tablets are nice, the Nexus fit my needs better than the Samsung and vice versa for the wife.

Go for the Nexus 7. I bought a galaxy tab 2 7.0. Had to return it, touchwiz was terrible.
Plus the galaxy only has 8GB of storage. That left about 4.59GB for apps and it would not let you move apps to SD card. So the SD cards can only be used for media storage. This started with honeycomb. Many people have different opinions of why this is. I think it is because Google doesn't what to use Microsoft's FAT file system on Nexus devices. Any device that uses or supports SD card has to pay a microsoft licensing fee. This is just a a guess, I don't know.
If you want to load a ton of movies and music and can live with touchwiz, buy the galaxy tab.
If you want to load a bunch of games and apps get the 16GB Nexus.
