Is anyone going to switch to the Surface?
I was just wondering about this because when the surface was announced many android users were excited about it and wanted to jump ship to it. But then the nexus 7 was announced and every android fan rejoiced and rushed to the play store to pre order one. I thought 7 in was too small for a tablet, but then I got the nexus 7 and I like 7in a lot more than 10 inches. It's mainly the portability that seals the deal for me. The only edge that the surface has, at least IMO, is that it is almost like a real PC, except in a tablet. The surface will probably have the best Microsoft office integration available, but that's it. The app ecosystem is probably not as good as the play store, and the surface might be too big, and too much like a PC to carry around. So, are any of you nexus 7 owners going to switch to the surface when it comes out?

No, I'm good with the Nexus 7 I've got. I still have my TouchPad as well. Won't need another tablet for awhile.

Re: Is anyone going to switch to the Surface?
The sad part is people thinking the Surface tablet will be anything like a PC. Windows Metro will have no real abilities to run x86 structured software. MS office metro will not be a full featured software anything like MS Office.

Re: Is anyone going to switch to the Surface?
The only appealing part of surface is the office aspect. If we could get a worf processor that reads and allows for editing of .doc/.docx files I would not even give it a second thought. As it is, it would be pretty hard to get me to switch the size is just too perfect and it does too many other things too well.

I plan on getting a Surface Pro when it's released to replace my ultra book, but I'll definitely be keeping my Nexus 7.

I'm looking forward to the surface specifically for work purposes. I think the surface is going to completely take the business market from the ipad, at least in markets where the windows operating system is dominant. As was stated in a previous post, it will be great to have a windows integrated tablet for business environments.

Yup. I got a Windows Phone the day it came out and will likely get a Surface Tablet, and pass on a WP8 phone, since I bought an S3. I like getting stuff from different platforms that that don't start with the letter "i"

Re: Is anyone going to switch to the Surface?
I probably will be using both for different tasks. The Nexus is excellent product to use due to its size and portability, but for actual computing tasks i.e. drafting letters and data bases the Surface will be the one to use running Windows 8 to do actual tasks. Most of the programs you use now on your PC will be compatible on the Surface tablet.
I am using Windows 8 now (Consumer Preview) as my only operating system and I find it to be very fast and does an excellent job.
And as a note I have had no issues or problems with the quality of my Nexus since I purchased same from Office Depot. I have a nice case to protect it and I love it...
P.S I believe the Microsoft Surface will replace the laptop for business use on the run. With the external case, mouse and keyboard setup it will be stiff competition for the all the rest of the tablets.Last edited by floridausa; 08-14-2012 at 09:57 AM.

Different products, different uses. I'm interested in the Surface Pro for work. I find Google Drive's offline support to be laughable, and DataViz doesn't really hit home for me either.

I think I'll definitely check it out. Don't think I'd be willing to part with my nexus though. Like another user said, the portability accompanied by the functionality is just something I'm not willing to give up.
Then again I may never get the surface because I also have an iPad 2. So...yeah I'm pretty set as far as tablets go.

Re: Is anyone going to switch to the Surface?
I'll probably get a Surface Pro to replace my laptop and iPad for heavy duty mobile computing. I hate the limitations the iPad imposes but love the portability of the form factor. I do hope the Pro can get at least 6-7 hours of useful battery life as well though. I think the longer battery life is a major game changer in how people use these devices.
At the same time, I'll probably get a Nexus 7 as well for reading/content consumption.
So basically the iPad will get split into a Surface Pro for heavier duties and a Nexus 7 for lighter duty. - 08-14-2012, 12:48 PM #23
Re: Is anyone going to switch to the Surface?
The ecosystem makes this a fascinating question. I thought about it and realized what differentiates the tab (either Android or iOS, or even QNX) from a Windows tab, and this is it. Windows is a general purpose system, with generalized, larger scale applications like Word, Excel and whatever else you run. They are multi-hundred megabyte monsters with a million features intended to do something multi-faceted and in depth. A tab will run a single, tightly focused app, like a calculator or a game, bookreader, or file transfer app or whatever. In other words very narrow, very well defined, single purpose. The apps are, by modern PC standards, tiny. This makes me wonder just how well the Surface will do. If it's going to want to be a laptop replacement, it's doesn't seem to me that it will be a very good one. The small keyboard can't be comfortable to use for long typing sessions, the screen will be confining. On the other hand if it's going to be a tab with a keyboard option like the Asus Transformer, then it will need an app ecosystem which does not exist.
I think I just talked myself out of buying one. - 08-14-2012, 01:06 PM #24
Re: Is anyone going to switch to the Surface?
One of the reasons I jumped ship from full-size Android tablets is the lacking app ecosystem. The primary reason being Google's foolish attitude that phone apps are just fine on a 10" tablet. So IMO, the Android tablet app ecosystem barely exists. It's probably gotten better since I last had a 10" Android tablet but the iPad app ecosystem is still orders of magnitude better.
On the other hand, while the Surface Metro ecosystem does not exist yet, I have a better hope that it'll catch up and surpass Android's table ecosystem. - 08-14-2012, 01:17 PM #25
Re: Is anyone going to switch to the Surface?
If the rumored $200 price is real (which I doubt), I'll get one. Though I'm sure the selection of apps will prevent it from replacing my Nexus 7 anytime soon.
