Re: Best way to send/receive text messages on Nexus 7?
Hmm, I've used both SyncSMS and TextTab... Kept both because one works fine over Wifi/Dropbox (as you said) and the other works infer Bluetooth when I'm out of the house. With so many people recommending Tablet Talk I guess I oughta try it out tho.
Edit: So yeah, I dunno how I missed Tablet Talk for so long but it seems to combine the better aspects of both the apps I mentioned above, plus it adds some extras like being able to receive/control calls on a Bluetooth headset from the tablet. I think TexTab actually looks a bit better but it hasn't been updated since December, so I might switch to Tablet Talk if it works reliably.
That being said, there's still some merit to SyncSMS' Dropbox approach since using DB means both devices don't have to be on the same network... Hell, you could leave your phone at home on the charger and hop on a plane and receive texts from anywhere you can find Wifi on the tablet... Not saying it's the most effective way of actually doing that, but there's merit to being able to text from the tablet without turning on Bluetooth or hopping on the same as the phone.Last edited by Impulses; 08-18-2012 at 02:46 AM.

For SMS syncing of your "real" phone # to your tablet, I personally swear by SyncSMS. As previously stated you don't need to be on the same network - just both be logged into the same Drop Box account & it just works.
However, textPlus also syncs if you don't mind having a secondary # - I personally use both depending on who I'm communicating with.

Mighty SMS is nice. Also handles MMS. Does not bypass carrier, but if you have unlimited text no worries. I use it on my ipad through chrome browser and it also syncs desktop. No notifications on ipad, but this can be enabled on desktop. SMS/MMS are sent out instantly across all platforms.

Tablet Talk works great but the one thing that it fails at is auto syncing. Both my phone and tablet connect to the wifi network but despite it's settings in the menu, never syncs automatically. I always have to manually connect both devices.

I also say Tablet Talk. Don't listen to people who suggest Google Voice. You'd have to either give everyone a new number or port your number over, which Verizon sees as you cancleing your account, which equals ETF. Plus GV also mean no MMS at all.
Tablet Talk lets you send and recieve SMS, but not MMS, but you'll still have the MMS on your phone. You can also initiate phone calls and turn on speaker phone/Bluetooth headset. - 08-18-2012, 01:42 PM #42

As an interesting aside to the google voice accent thing. I live in the wild of Scotland (think Braveheart style tech but without wells - factoid urine contains 87% of your recommended vitamin intake) I just ignore voice recognition apps because with my accent no chance.
Fear not fellow backwoodsmen I'be solved or problems. I try and mimic Phil from the podcast and it works every time. No way I'm growing a beard like Jerry to replicate his acoustics and Alex is a manc (google Shaun Ryder talking) which along with scousers (google Jamie carragher talking) lets just say if voice recognition ever works with them human ingenuity had reached its limits.
Tldr try talk like Phil, you'll never have problem with google voice again
Its not unprecedented a former English football manager decided to talk in a English speaking Dutch accent when he worked there http://goo.gl/oGxqs so don't worry about feeling a prat when in public
