Default Unable to connect to public wifi

Unable to connect to public wifi. The brand new Nexus 7 cannot obtain an ip address. When I open the browser it does not show any sort of login screen. What is wrong?

Have you turned on wifi and does your N7 see the network? I'm not sure what you mean by no login screen in the browser. You should be logging in through the wifi settings in the settings menu. It doesn't have anything to do with the browser.- sheureka

Yes, I have the WiFi on and I can see the network. I select it and press connect but, it cannot get an IP address. I try opening Chrome to see if I need to log in but...there is nothing.

Are you trying to connect to a network called "Free Public Wifi"?

I had this problem too but found out it was Chrome's fault. Chrome is buggy as hell. Use a different browser, I highly recommend Opera since I know it works fine. Once you go to the home screen the Wifi provider Log In will show up as it should and you agree to their terms and you should be fine.

I am so disappointed in Chrome it used to be my favorite but it's just got way too many bugs for me

If you are still having problems connecting after you try what I mentioned then you have a defective N7 and need to get a replacement asap.

I figured the problem out. It was the fact that the browser (Chrome) was using https instead of http. As soon as I changed that, I was able to see the network login screen and all was well. Thanks to all for their input.

Hey scmathisen, i'm having the same issue that you were having with your nexus 7. When i'm at school i'm unable to connect to the public wifi because the web browser (Chrome and Firefox) wouldn't bring up the college wifi authentication login page. You mentioned that you changed https to http on Chrome. How did you do that? this problem is driving me nuts. Please tell me exactly how you fixed that issue. I need help. Thanks.

Also having the same issue. It will say it’s connecting to my campus network then just says saved. I'm never able to actually connect to the network. Tried forgetting the network, rebooting, etc and nothing works. It’s strange because I had zero problems connecting to my home network and I read that many people with Wi-Fi issues couldn't connect to their home networks. Very frustrating because I wanted to use this for note taking during lectures.

Same here. I won't connect to UMass Lowell campus network. It might be a JB issue, because once my Galaxy Nexus updated to JB it no longer would connect.

If your campuses are using Enterprise WPA or WPA2, it's a known issue, and you can't connect until they update JellyBean to do so.

Going crazy with my new Nexus 7. Could log into WIFI at the Staples but can't get into my VERIZON FIOS HOME NETWORK! Wants me to enter a numeric code into my router but doesn't tell me where or how to do this. It wont authenticate my network router. I even tried directly connecting the router to the Nexus via USB cable... NaDa!!!!!!
