    Default NFC Beam Issues

I've spent a few weeks trying enjoying my N7, but I'm finding NFC is borderline unusable.

Example: I looked up directions on GMaps on my N7, and tried to beam it to my GNexus via NFC. After 3 minutes of the devices "connecting" and then disconnecting, attempting to connect again, and ultimately doing nothing, I gave up and just typed the address into my GNexus. Later in the day I had more time to tinker, and after a few minutes of sliding the devices all over each other like two greased up impassioned lovers, I got it to work, but all it did was take my GNexus to the Play store to show me GMaps...which was, of course, already on my device.

Sending images is slightly easier, when I can get the two to connect, which I often can't.

So is this a hardware issue, or does the NFC beam feature just...suck?

Google Wallet inconsistencies aside, I think the beaming feature is limited and does not allow you to transfer just anything. I thought it was maybe just images and possibly contact info. I am not positive of this though.

I believe some features are limited between Jelly Bean devices. But but you say you have beamed pictures so I assume your Galaxy Nexus is on JB.

I have found that their is a sweet spot between the two devices. When you hold them in that spot the connection should establish and remain until you desperate the devices. However, when you beam pictures and things like that I believe it uses Bluetooth so you would only need to hold them together till you establish a connection.

I've been growing fascinated by the NFC (Near Field Communications) capabilities that are being built into mobile devices like our Nexus 7s.

What's got me intrigued is that you can buy little stick-on tags (about the size of a 50-cent piece) that are programmable to do all sorts of things.

Examples: I can program a tag with our hotel's WiFi info, so that guests merely have to tap their devices to connect.

I can put a tag in the plane that tells my tablet to turn on Garmin Pilot, disable WiFi, turn on the GPS, and Bluetooth connect to my Garmin GDL-39.

I can put another one in my car to tell my tablet to turn on GPS, start the CoPilot software, shut off WiFi, etc.

Another one next to my chair could turn WiFi on, start Bluetooth (so I can play the stereo), etc.

The possibilities are endless. Some hotels are moving to NFC-enabled door locks. I will be adding the ability to pay for rooms ASAP.

So why is Apple still resisting this technology? The rumored iPhone5 apparently will still not have NFC built in...

The NFC antenna is up by the top of the N7 and in the battery on the GNex. Screen has to be active on both for it to work. Line them up right and makes sure they are active and you shouldn't have a problem. I use it between the two almost daily without issue once I worked this out, transferring files that can be 40mb+ in size!

I keep having the same problem trying to send pictures back and forth from my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7. It just keeps making that stupid noise over and over but it won't connect! Very irritating! Is it my GNexus or my N7 or is it a problem with NFC altogether?
