Doesn't exist since there is no cellular data connection

You would have to put the cap on the mobile hotspot, not on the N7. The N7 is a consuming device not a distributing device.

Why would you want a data cap on it anyway?

So one does not go over the limit.

The carrier should have tools that would let you be notified and monitor usage.

But on a wifi device there is no "limit"...

The device I am 99% sure the OP is referring to is a 3/4G device which you can connect several services to via wifi. 3/4G Providers often have limits. Using wifi from device to device would have no limit, but from downloading anything from the Internet which would come down via the main 3/4G connection, would. eg

If you do not fully understand what is going on here, it is best just to read and not comment.

Candidly, I don't see how this will be a useful feature. Since multiple devices can connect to the mobile hotpot, monitoring data consumption at ONE end point isn't particularly helpful. As Foyt20 mentioned above, the only way to accomplish what the OP is after is to monitor/manage/throttle the hotpot itself, not the potentially variable number of device(s) that connect to the hotspot.

To put it another way, you want to manage water consumption in your house, so you decide to monitor the flow in your kitchen sink.

I was going to say maybe try an app with traffic alert. Traffic Monitor has alerts for daily, weekly, monthly limits that you set. But it only tracks on the mobile data (if the device has it, Nexus 7 obviously doesnt).

Even if it did have alerts for WiFi usage, it wouldn't be accurate because sometimes you'll be on the mobile hotspot, sometimes on wireless.

Someone should make an app that monitors WiFi usage per Access Point and you can set alerts. Not sure how many people will find that useful but at least the OP is one person.

Maybe the carrier has an app to install so you can easily track your data? Maybe the app or services has email alerts?

Someone needs to lock this thread down, since it's been asked before, by OPs who do not fully understand the capabilities of the Nexus 7.

    1) The Nexus 7 is a wifi-only device. This means it's not capable of retrieving data from the internet on its own. Wifi-only devices are reliant on connecting to an exsisting wifi connection via wifi hotspots to retrieve data from the internet. This includes mobile hotspots (aka wireless tethering)

2)If you are intrested in wireless tethering, whether you pay for the service (eg Verizon mobile hotspot) or not (eg Foxfi app) it's important that you keep a record of how much data you are consuming from your hosting device, which is most likely your cell phone, and install a data management app that tells you how much data you've consumed from the start of your billing period.

3)If your phone has ICS already installed on your host device, you don't have to install an addition management app. Just go to Settings>Data Usage> and adjust the setting to your prefrences. You can even set an alert and limit on your data usage. Feel free to check on your usage as many times as you like.

I hope I was able to clear up any confusion, and did my best not to sound condecending. If you have any questions about this matter, please PM me.
