Re: Wow. How's Google going to beat new HD Kindle Fire at $159?
I don't think they will--Google increases profits with Play, and Amazon with any of their services, but I don't think Windows has that same motive to reduce costs.
if the price is anything under $400, I'm going to make my laptop extinct lol. I don't game, and the only crucial software I have on the laptop is Photoshop, which I won't use when I'm not at home. - 09-07-2012, 10:02 AM #127

The 8.9 intrigues me when someone roots it and has a nice stable version of ICS or Jellybean. Until then I'm happy with my Nexus 7.

Re: Wow. How's Google going to beat new HD Kindle Fire at $159?
I had the kindle fire and that carousel is the worst. I would not buy another kindle if the home screen looks like that. Also, the browser was not great.
Based on these two issues, I will not buy a kindle tablet although I am heavily invested in the amazon ecosystem. - 09-07-2012, 11:03 AM #129
Re: Wow. How's Google going to beat new HD Kindle Fire at $159?
Windows 8 features an "app store", so Microsoft may be compelled to make some similar moves toward building ecosystem/market share. I still don't expect the Windows tablets to be quite cost competitive, though, and I'm not sure I'd want one with RT anyway. Time will tell...

Re: Wow. How's Google going to beat new HD Kindle Fire at $159?
No hits in Play store. Does it cost? Even with free credit, the idea of buying an app for one web site because that site refuses to support what they view as competition is a non-starter.
I get that A'zon wants people to buy Kindles, but with 1.3 million Android devices being activated every day - 70,000 tablets - they are punishing their customers who are paying for Prime for not buying their store dongle device.
EDIT: I see it's called xScope. $2.99. FTS."The Nexus 4 is such a big black slab of power that if you dropped it down in the middle of a pack of monkeys, they'd start using weapons." - Dirk Belligerent. - 09-07-2012, 11:53 AM #131

Newer does not always mean better! The N7 still has a better CPU and GPU and it runs JellyBean. Google Rocks now and it will Rock in the future, Nuff said.

I passed on the kindle fire to begin with just because I did not want to be locked into the Amazon ecosystem. I can get the vast majority of Amazon services on my N7, plus I have the added benefit of Google apps and the ability to easily root my device. Those things, for me personally, far outweigh anything Amazon can do for me on their devices.

Re: Wow. How's Google going to beat new HD Kindle Fire at $159?
I was excited to hear the news that Fire HD 7in had 4g until I went to amazon and found out it was the 8.9 in version, not 7in. I like the 7in and if I wanted a 9/10in tablet I would get an ipad. I think after getting over the buzz and reading up, I'm happy and will keep my nexus 7.

Re: Wow. How's Google going to beat new HD Kindle Fire at $159?
I don't think they 'refuse to support competition', it's Chrome's fault for not enabling flash. xScope supports HD flash.
Aside from pissy sites like Hulu, you can stream HD videos from anywhere. Mozilla supports flash but it's TERRIBLE quality. So with the free credit, xScope is a worthwhile purchase. - 09-07-2012, 02:14 PM #136

If a 2.99 (free with included credit) app gives the N7 the function that is the deciding factor on which device you buy, buying it is a no brainer. It actually used to be free a month ago, but when the folks at xscope realised they were the only option for proper Flash on the N7, they made it 2.99.

Re: Wow. How's Google going to beat new HD Kindle Fire at $159?
I recall reading somewhere that Google was not concerned about Apple which everyone would assume that they should be but to be concerned about Amazon.
It looks like the prediction might have been spot on. Amazon has the all the right stuff in place to do that._____________

IMO it's the razor & razor blades. Both Google & Amazon want you to be captured customers AFTER you buy their tablet.
The Kindle not having GPS is a show stopper for me. If you travel, GPS with Tripadvisor is such a huge benefit.
The tablet market today reminds me of the PC market of 20 years ago where there were significant improvements every 6 to 9 months. Exciting times. - 09-07-2012, 03:53 PM #143

I love the pricing pressure. But for me I just cant stand the completely custom OS build. It is built off of ICS but who cares you wouldnt ever know it. I like my N7 which is a true tablet that allows me to purchase what I want where I want.

Re: Wow. How's Google going to beat new HD Kindle Fire at $159?
What I meant is that the only reason A'zon hasn't put out an Amazon Instant Video app for non-Fire Android devices is because they want people to buy Fires. There is no technical limitation and they just rolled out an iPad app, so this is strictly trying to force Fires on people at the expense of leaving Prime users SOL if they don't buy in.
It's not that huge a deal because I can watch through my consoles on the big HDTVs; it's more a principle of the issue matter."The Nexus 4 is such a big black slab of power that if you dropped it down in the middle of a pack of monkeys, they'd start using weapons." - Dirk Belligerent. - 09-07-2012, 04:06 PM #146
Re: Wow. How's Google going to beat new HD Kindle Fire at $159?
If tablet specs continue to improve, I can see the larger ones almost eliminating the need for laptops in the near future. Laptops will become the new PC, at least for younger people who don't need a desktop PC to do their work at home. Or at the very least, they'll help drive down the cost of basic laptops.
I'd love to see a tablet with multiple USB ports, maybe an HDMI port, SD port, etc. though, it would make the device a lot thicker.. - 09-07-2012, 04:36 PM #147
