Notifications stop after sleep
Hi,
I am new to the Nexus 7, but not to Android. So far I am loving the N7, but I have one problem that is really bothering me. I use both Touchdown (work email) and the built in email app (not Gmail) for my emails. If the screen is on, everything works just fine, and if the device has been sleeping for a minute or two everything is still fine. The problem is, once the device has been asleep for a little while - 10 minutes or more I'd guess, the notifications stop working.
I have checked to be sure that wifi is set to stay connected always and auto-sync is turned on for both apps with push enabled on both as well.
I have run out of places to check. Anyone have this type of problem or know of a solution?
Thank you - any help appreciated.

Re: Notifications stop after sleep
I mean I no longer get any indication that I have an email.

Re: Notifications stop after sleep
So, you have everything set, as you said. You know you get email, because you manually sync it, right? Did you make sure your notifications were even on? If you did, what did you set the interval to?

Re: Notifications stop after sleep
Yes, as I said, the notifications work just fine as long as the devices isn't sleeping. They even work fine if the device hasn't been sleeping for very long, but after it has been asleep for a little bit, then the notifications just stop, even though I know that I have received email. Both email accounts (Touchdown and built-in email app) are set to "push"

That is exactly the behavior that I am looking for! I just can't figure it out. I actually called the Google customer service number and the person that I got was very nice and helpful and set up a N7 with push email while I was on the phone and actually experienced the same behavior that I am getting. She said she'd forward it to the development team. Apparently it isn't a wide spread problem though. - 09-16-2012, 08:29 AM #8
Re: Notifications stop after sleep
May not be the root cause, but there's a bug in JB's Secure EAS support :
I use Touchdown at work and I can tell you there a lot of options and settings in advanced preferences you should review. I don't use it on my N7 as I'm waiting to see if they release that fix in 4.1.

.
I have reviewed all of the advanced settings in Touchdown and all seems well. The thing is, even the built-in email app is giving the same results. If it was just one application, I could blame it on an app setting, but since it is both apps, that makes me think that this isn't the case.

It does, both the built-in email app and Touchdown both are configurable for periodic checks rather than push. I prefer not to use it that way, but I can certainly test it out. - 09-16-2012, 09:32 AM

Re: Notifications stop after sleep
Silly question; do you have any type of task killer that may be kicking in preventing syncing?

Re: Notifications stop after sleep
Same thing happens to my tablet. While I have it charged over night and it goes to sleep none of the notifications come through. When I turn it on all the notifications come through. I'd love to find out what the cause of this may be.

Re: Notifications stop after sleep
I have some further information.
I have been on a wifi system at work today and all seems to be working well. Notifications are working as I'd expect. I am not sure how my home wifi system could be causing this type of problem, but that's the only thing I can think at this point.
Anyone have any ideas on what I need to check?
Thanks! - 09-17-2012, 10:35 PM #20Sent by accident, not using the Android Central app

Re: Notifications stop after sleep
Is there any way to get apps to still sync when the device is awake? I turned off wifi in sleep mode, and and ever since the email widget never updates (even when I manually sync) and it never sends me notifications, which is frustrating. My laptop's in repair, and I'm relying on this device..

Re: Notifications stop after sleep
Yeah, this definitely sounds like it could be a pain. Still, I'm glad that it doesn't appear to be the N7.
The wifi that it has worked successfully on has been two different open public wifi's... When I said I was at work, I was, but I was actually using the open wifi from a business next door.

No, the modem/router that I have is a Motorola SBG6580.
I do have a Netgear range extender in the house, but I wasn't connected to it, I was connected directly to the Motorola.

I'm not sure on this. My problem is different. The only thing I can think of is to check "data usage" --> "settings" and make sure auto-sync is on. - 12-13-2012, 10:21 AM #23
Re: Notifications stop after sleep
Did you ever resolve this issue? I'm seeing the same thing with my Nexus 7 (but I don't use Touchdown and I'm not even sure what that is). I don't get any notifications while my tablet is asleep at home but I get them no problem in the office. This includes Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Google Talk, Google Voice, Facebook, etc. We're using Netgear routers in both locations, but I don't know why that merits a  since I don't really hang out on these forums regularly. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Notifications stop after sleep
Unfortunately, I haven't resolved this. I've just lived with it so far. I think I have narrowed it down to an issue with my router at home though. It seems to lose the connection intermittently when I'm not using the device, but then it'll come back all by itself at random times. I don't have this issue on other wi-fi systems. Definitely frustrating.

Re: Notifications stop after sleep
Is there some issue with N7's WIFI and Netgear routers? I am using a Netgear DIR-655. I do not have any problems with it that I have noticed though.
I am having the same problem of not getting any notifications after the tablet goes to sleep. I am not rooted and running fully stock. I do use the Auto Airplane app and have wifi set to not be on during sleep mode. I have noticed this problem ever since the first 4.1 update.
I get notifications no problem when the tablet is not alseep. Even some other apps work when the tablet goes to sleep such as my Messenger With You app.

[Edit: probably. That why we use Touchdown Pro, my Gingerbread and now ICS HTC phone won't do Secure EAS at all. YMMV.]
