Unhappy My wife broke my tablet should I get a Nexus 7?

My wife dropped my Galaxy Tab 10.1 on the floor last night and it no longer works . I've been looking at the Nexus 7 for a while now but wondering if the smaller screen will be better than a 10" screen. Also wondering if maybe I should wait a few weeks to see what the holiday batch of tablets will be.

    Thoughts?

I wouldn't buy a Nexus 7 until the new models are announced, probably by the end of the month. 7" vs 10" is entirely subjective. I find 10" screens better for web browsing, content creation and videos, but I prefer the smaller screen for most other activities. Try a 7" tab before you buy.

If she broke it, she should buy you a replacement out of her shoe budget.

You gotta be kidding?! Women today would go without shoes for a good tablet.

I love mine a lot! I prefer the size over larger tablets - it's definitely more "mobile" and easy to store away in a backpack or something. It does everything I need it to do and it's blazing fast. Get it!

The Nexus 7's size is perfect for me. Absolutely spot-on. I've never felt the need for a larger screen (disclaimer: I've never OWNED a larger tablet; I might feel differently if I was coming from a 10-inch tablet). It's portable, battery life is great, it's very light, and the screen is plenty big enough for gaming, watching video, etc. It's also a Nexus device so it'll get new OS releases faster than a branded device. But I'd suggest going to a store and handling ANY 7" fondleslab for a few minutes, just to see if the size seems OK. If you can actually try a Nexus 7, all the better.

As far as timing: if you can do without it for a few weeks, I'd do so. Who knows what announcements over the next few weeks will bring? The 16GB might drop to the price of the current 8GB, giving you a more useful device for the same $200 you'd pay for an 8GB now. Or a 32GB affordable one might come out.

Or, of course, nothing at all might happen, meaning you'd buy exactly what you are thinking about now for the same price you'd pay now. For $200, you really can't go too wrong. So if you're itching for a fondleslab now, it's not the optimum time to buy, but the worst case is you'll probably overpay by 20 or 30 bucks, get less memory than you might if you wait a month or two.

I would agree to wait until the new models are announced, hopefully by the end of October.

As for a 7" tablet, I love it over a 10". It's the right size to carry with you and comfortable to hold with one hand. The screen is large enough for browsing, reading and even gaming. Between a N7 or even my KF, I prefer the size over the transformer. It just feels like a hulking beast while I can just carry my N7 around the house like a book. Easy enough to throw into the purse or backpack.

I tried the KFHD and N7 side by side at home and I have to say I love the N7 way more. I prefer having the pure Google experience over the Amazon ecosystem, even after rooting the KFHD.

I agree with natehoy, especially if you're in the USA. Even if there's no new Nexus unveiled, you might score a Black Friday deal from the retailer.

If I would highly suggest waiting just a few weeks. A couple of manufacturers are still slated for announcements and the Nexus MAY be dropping in price or a newer model released so sit tight if you can.

If you can't wait and want to buy now, then feel safe that if anything is announced/ released within the next 2 weeks you can send the device back for a refund or if the price drops, you can be issued the difference.

Nexus 7 is already priced at almost no profit to Google so a drop in price is pretty unforeseen and possibly even internationally illegal through my crystal ball. If you are thinking of waiting, black friday would probably be your best if not only chance... then again by black Friday people will suggest you wait for the day after Christmas lol.

Yes, buy a Nexus 7. It's fun, useful and practical.

Sure, wait a couple weeks, but it's possible in a couple weeks the newest rumor will be that there will be an announcement in another few weeks. Then wait another few weeks for the next rumor of another announcement.

But whenever you buy it, I'd highly recommend you spend the extra money and get the 16gb model (or 32gb if it exists when you buy it). You may or may not need it, but you definitely can't add it on later. It will give you flexibility and breathing room, and you'll have less concern over the number and size of apps downloaded, or storing some media files locally. Yes, you can use an OTG cable and flash drive for extra media storage, but it's not the most convenient thing to do.

Get a tablet when you want it.

Sure, you can wait 4-6 weeks for whatever but, thus far, much of what is on the horizon is based on speculation. When it comes to technology, there will always be something better just around the corner.

I look at it this way, I can enjoy my tablet during those six weeks that something new may or may not be available. Sure it may cost me $20 or 30 more, about the price of two movie tickets and a bag of popcorn.

There is no harm in dropping some cash into your local reseller and trying it for a week or two. If it's not to your liking you can get a full refund. Just enquire about return policies. 2 weeks is the norm in my area. I have been through many tablets this way. My Nexus 7 purchase, I was anticipating to return before I used it. I wasn't expecting to like the device as much as I do. Plus the $25 Play Store credit was an unexpected surprise for me.

    If
    - you want a 7" tablet
    - you don't need a 3g/4g data connection
    - you don't need video output
    - you don't need to connect to WPA Enterprise wireless (though it sounds like this may be fixed with the new updates)
    - you don't need a rear-facing camera
    - you don't need more than 16gb of storage space

Go for it. It's a great device, as long as none of the above is a deal breaker.

Honestly, just wait to see if the 32GB starts shipping. If not, get the 16GB and some OTG cables from Amazon for $0.90.

The 32GB is close enough (possibly Oct 24th) for you to not have to wait long. But waiting months for a rumor is just dumb.

Remember, if you're always waiting for the "next best thing", you'll never get anything. Technology moves so fast right now, your device will be outdated in 4 to 6 months anyway, it's a given.

Supposedly it expired on September 25th or therabouts here in the US. They obviously sent the memo to the Canadian division via a combination of the US post office and Canadian Post.

It expired worldwide on September 30th. I think you got lucky. :P A LOT of people are still getting it though so...buy it now and enjoy your credit, I'd say. Google could stop it at any time without warning (if they do and you still have money, it'll be refunded to you if you call and ask).

IDK. It sounds easier than replacing a battery in the iPhone.

It may be better now, but considering how much Google was charging for shipping on pre-orders, my 16GB was only $25 more than Google was charging for the 8GB delivered.

I've had/have the iPad1 and "New". Love them for the web and things like Zite and FlipBoard. The Nexus7 is far better for watching media... the screen is so close to you anyway, I don't see much difference, and the weight/bulk in your hand is much more manageable. The sound is great, too.
Since OTG is so easy and cheap to set up [see the Threads on here], I wouldn't hesitate to go grab a 16g unit. The only thing they are likely to introduce mid-cycle is a 32g unit anyway. The money you save can go for a bigger one if you miss the form factor. The Nexus ought to be pretty easy to CraigsList.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback. My wife and I especially liked this response:

. Too bad her shoe budget is only about $40/year.

The biggest bummer is that I have a business trip next week and I might actually have to use an analog device (aka, a book) rather that watching a video on the flight.

In the end I think what I will do is drop by the local Staples to try out the Nexus 7 to see if I like the 7" form factor. However, since it is so close to the holidays I figure I might as well wait and see what new devices such as a Nexus 10 & Nexus 7 32gb and/or holiday sales might bring before making a final decision. I'm not interested in paying Verizon a monthly fee so I will be going wi-fi only. I use my tablet for playing a few games, watching netflix, revision3 and photoshop user tv podcast so I can live without it for a few weeks. Either way, I'll be sure to have a new device before Dec 25.

FWIW, I checked Craisglist and Nexus 7 are currently being offered at retail prices.
