Gmail Update in 4.2

One of the things I was most looking forward to in Android 4.2 was the Gmail updates, and specifically the ability to auto-fit messages to fit to the screen, and allow pinch/double-tap to zoom.

I just tried it out, but those improvements weren't there. So I went into the Gmail general settings and found that the Auto-fit Messages option was off by default. I checked the box to activate it, and it works perfectly now. I no longer have to scroll around to see the entire message. It's about time!

I just thought I'd share this in case others were wondering why this feature, which should be the default, wasn't showing up.

Thanks!!! I thought they left that feature out.
Thanks for sharing.

I forgot to mention that the other main enhancement is the ability to swipe the message in the conversation list to archive or delete it. I think it defaults to on, but you can turn it off or change it to always delete (instead of archive) in the general settings.

Now if they'd improve the reply/forward function to allow inline editing of the original message without inserting a bunch of > symbols, I'd be a happier camper.

How do swipe to delete? I've tried swiping in both directions, and the option was to archive only.

I wonder will they update Gmail to 4.2 via the Play Store? Or is it only Android 4.2 users that will get it?

I wish Google would make an updated Gmail app for everyone and not just 4.2 users.

The standard setting is that swiping will "Archive or delete". This means that it depends on which conversation list you are looking at as to what the swiping action achieves. Here are the swiping details:

Inbox: archives the conversation
System labels (Sent Mail or All Mail): deletes the conversation
Regular labels (labels you create): removes the label

Swipe once (in either direction) to perform the action. Swipe again to clear it from the list, or tap Undo to, uh, undo.

If you want the swipe to always delete the conversation no matter what label it is currently under, go to General Settings where you can change the Swiping Conversation List option to Always Delete.

I've researched this and don't have an answer. Google Search has failed me. However, my guess is that eventually it will be updated from version 4.1.2 that is currently in the Play Store, since 4.1.2 was previously the most recent version and was available to all.

If you are using a rooted device that has Android 4.0, and which you don't think will be updated to 4.2, you can sideload the apk and follow a specific procedure to install it. The apk can be found with a little Googling.

I want to hug you right now.

My S3 is rooted and on the CM10 nightly, so I guess I'll just wait for the 4.2 ROM from them. Thanks.

Still not what I want which is a toggle to give you the whole screen width in landscape for reading and writing message.

New Nexus7 user here, but had the same frustration after being used to being able to zoom to a full page view in the email application with my BB Playbook.

Looks like the gmail interface from the Chrome browser is quite a bit more readable than the gmail application interface on the Nexus7.

^^Bump!

Seriously, I can't believe this is still an issue. Is there not a petition we can sign to get this sorted? Lots of people use their tablet like a little laptop, so picking it and rotating it to get full screen is the last thing you want to do. With the size of the email in landscape mode, I might as well be using my phone :(
