in this case, Null equals literally "no data" as opposed to zero which IS a value

no idea - add a contact and see if it works - if it adds OK, you have your answer and vice versa
in database work, nulls are present all the time and are not an issue by in large unless a particular imported data set has nulls and the destination set is not configured to handle a null.
