Re: What can I do?
Whether or not you think a ROM is "good" is entirely subjective. CM is very popular, as is my favorite, AOKP. There are many others, too, like Paranoid Android. The best thing to do is to learn how to install them and then test drive a few to find out what you like.
I use AOKP on my Galaxy Nexus, but I like just using stock Android on my Nexus 7.Proudly Apple-free since 1998.Thanked by: - 02-06-2013, 08:42 PM #27

Re: What can I do?
Cyanogen Mod (CM) is always a given for most to try but often doesn't have the best reputation for battery life. Many people seem to turn to AOKP and other well known ROM developers.
Again its all trial and error seeing what suits you best. I always tell people to grab a few ROMs, take each one for a test drive for a couple days and see what fits you the best.
That is the best part about rooting on Android. Plenty of options and its all just a few minutes flash away from the next great adventure

Re: What can I do?
Ultimately, probably not much and rooting doesn't add much for the things I will mention.
Widgets and actionable notifications are probably the two biggest things. Fitting in my back pants pocket or my wife's purse.
There are other app differences too. Take the Nook App. I can purchase content right from the app on my Nexus 7, the IOS app sends me to the web. Personal preference, but I don't care for Web pages when a well designed app could do it better.
There is also the ability to change the default keyboard. The Jelly Bean stock keyboard is OK, but I like SwiftKey. The IOS keyboard isn't bad, but lacks the shortcuts that are available in other device keyboards.
Something that I don't mind so much from the iPad, but aggravates me with the iPhone is that dropbox can't sync until it's done or without me launching the app.
Again, probably not very big things overall, but I'd miss them now that I'm used to them.

Re: What can I do?
Those are the most minute examples especially for rooting you mentioned not one thing that requires root.
You gotta compare permission level for permission level so stock to stock or jailbreak to root otherwise its a poor argument

Re: What can I do?
With root you can do a bunch of stuff.
Theme your ui to your liking
Modify how your system responds through CPU controls and voltage controls
You can use a ps3 dualshock controller on the phone for emulators or use it as a mouse.
You can create backups of apps or even full backups of your entire system.
You could modify DPI settings depending on your ROM allowing you to use tablet layouts or just allow you to utilize your screen better.
Your battery life could be vastly improved and your user experience could be far better than stock.

TWRP. ClockworkMod messed things up with Android 4.2, and I haven't used it since.

Re: What can I do?
I realize I'm late to the discussion, but going back to the original question
, my answer would be "probably not much". I mean it's all the same basic hardware. The point of the Nexus I think is what you can do without being rooted, or rather, locked in to a single company....what can I do with my nexus 7 I can't do with my jail broken iPad42... need I say more...Thanked by: - 02-07-2013, 03:59 PM #39
Re: What can I do?
^This^
I think this kind of stuff is cool. Being able to increase clock speed, mess with layouts, and increase battery life is awesome. ROM-ing is also up there for me. I dont know much about jailbroken ipads but my first thought is you cant do any of that stuff. Or can you?Thanked by: - 02-07-2013, 04:49 PM #40
Re: What can I do?
Since it sounds like you are new to rooting / loading roms I would suggest investing in Titanium Backup (there is a free version). When flashing ROMs you can make a flash-able .zip file that contains all your user apps and app data so instead of having to manually reconfigure your device you just flash the zip file through recovery after installing the ROM and BAM, all the apps and info is there waiting for you!
Also one of the best things about being rooted is the ability to use various AdBlockers! I personally recommend however there are various alternatives. I just like AdFree because when I am using any type of tethering app (wireless and wired) it will even block the ads from the tethered device! Sometimes it is subtle things such as this that can make a huge difference!Thanked by: - 02-07-2013, 04:58 PM #41
Re: What can I do?
You can also download Swype, which is an amazing keyboard. . . I don't know if that can be on a jailbroken iOS device, but it can't be done on stock iOS.
You can also have emulators for any of the past console games (NES, sega, N64, etc).
USB hosting. You can plug any keyboard in use it. You can also plug in a jump drive and transfer files to/from it. - 02-08-2013, 12:17 AM #42
