Is 8.9" the best tablet size?

The biggest complaint against 7 inch tablets is that the screen looks cramped on certain apps, while the biggest complaint against 10 inch tablets is that it feels too big. But there are plenty of 8 and 9 inch tablets that offer a compromise.

For general use (reading books, web browsing, watching videos, playing games), what tablet size do you think has the least amount of compromises? 8 inches or 8.9 inches? Or maybe even something in-between, like Samsung's 8.4" Galaxy Tab S? It seems like the Nexus 9's screen size and aspect ratio was designed to have as few compromises as possible, but some people still think the Nexus 9 is too big.

I really want to go to the store so I can play with the Nexus 9's up for display (if they have those up yet). I want to know how the size compares to the Nexus 7.
