I have just used an app called My Backup for my Nexus one which seems to have 'done the business'
Can I now safely attempt to root my phone in the knowledge that if I muck it up I can restore everthing to its present state ,non rooted?

I don't see why not. You did better than I did as I didn't even back up anything before I rooted. Of course, my phone was/is brand new and before I rooted, I hardly had anything up there worth backing up. It wouldn't have been a big deal if I had to reinstall the stock ROM and set everything back up.

Once you root and flash your new recovery you should get in the habit of doing a Nandroid backup before you make significant changes to your phone. Many times I have done something I didn't like and was able to pretend it never happened by restoring a Nand backup.
