Download play movies to external drive?

I just ordered the nexus player yesterday so looking forward to getting it whenever it comes. Was just wondering if anyone has tested if its possible to do this? I have fast enough internet but there are times that I don't like relying on wifi and would rather just have the movies on a drive. If its not a feature I hope google allows it in the future

There are a couple of ways to do this from what I have read, one is over your network to a windows shared drive (this could be done via wifi) or enabling the micro-usb port and attaching a powered hard disk. The latter is still not clear from what I have been reading, but imagine will work. I know some people have been able to connect to the usb with OTG Disk Explorer (you need an micro OTG cable).
