Google bought Moto to create their own hardware division and then a few years later they sold it at a big loss. Why didnt they just keep it to build all the pixel hardware that just got announced?

Motorola Mobility, as I understand it, never made a lot of money. Plus, I am told, they were concerned about hardware manufacturers like Samsung abandoning Android if Google was making their own hardware.and then a few years later they sold it at a big loss. Why didnt they just keep it to build all the pixel hardware that just got announced?
