The cost of the Pixel/Pixel XL

using the OP's math, how much does it cost to get married and have a wife?
(break the cost down by years/months/hours?)

Expensive because, no waterproofing, no sd card support, no wireless charging, no stereo sound on video camera and no OIS. Some are having a hard some justifying paying that much for the pixel.

It appears to be at least as waterproof, if not more, than some phones advertising full blown waterproofing. Should be good enough in case of an accident.

SD card support is a double edged sword. The SD cards are much, much, slower than the UFS 2.0 flash storage used in these phones. In order to guarantee the kind of performance you're paying for, they can't allow you to install much slower storage. However, I understand that it's always better to have the choice, but with the free cloud services and modest price increase to 128GB, I think Google did a pretty good job with it all.

I don't think wireless charging is very popular, it doesn't seem to have really caught on. I don't know one person who uses it. I suspect more people wanted a mostly metal phone than wireless charging during their market research, but that is just a guess.

I agree with you on stereo sound recording, that could be better, but that's extremely minor for most users I would think.

Google's EIS works better than any OIS I've seen, so I would actually flip that around and challenge other manufacturers using OIS to step up their game to match what Google is doing.

YES - I have been with V for years - would be hard to get me to leave them.

I paid $649 on the 21st at the local store - saw no contract deals online than.

ETA - looks like the XLs will ship on 12/2 - no shipping dates for the Pixel - maybe they ship right away??
Ah yeah so for current subscribers it's good but new cannot get that deal.

Every situation has "the good news, bad news " scenario. The way wireless providers operate defies description at times. I could have saved many $$s with the 2 year contract deal.

Considering the above comments, this is an interesting question. From a value perspective I look at it like a car. Your car spends most of its time parked somewhere (i.e. not driving it . . . unless you live in California in which case you probably spend 25% of your time stuck in traffic). So you would think buying a car is a strict value proposition. But it isn't. Buyers opt for a number of convenience items etc. etc. etc. but spend very little time using them. There are plenty of budget options in the Android space. But for those with the desire and resources, there is the Pixel . . . a phone that isn't necessarily a good value or practical for most users . . .

All of the things you use assistant for (badly, I might add, I keep trying though) I used the spen for easily.

If Samsung phones can cost this much don't see the problem in Pixel costing that much. If you have issues about pricing across iPhones, Samsung and Pixel then that's reasonable. But if you have issues just on Pixel pricing then that's just crazy.

I'll never put my pixel in water intentionally but it certainly has passed many water tests online So I'm not concerned there

I couldn't care less about SD card support. Unlimited photo and video storage and Spotify for my music. Not to mention I got the 128gb.

I think sd cards aren't used nearly as much these days.

I have both these features with my note 7 and haven't used either

I haven't used wireless charging once on my note 7 either, i dont like the speed compared to standard plugging in

If those are the reasons why this device isn't top notch then it surely is still great to me because I don't care about any of that

I said it before and I will say it again.

SD Cards will be a thing of the past in the next year or two. Samsung is clinging onto it, but in the fight to make devices more compact, more features and battery life.. an SD Card slot is a lot of real estate inside the phone.

Also, SD cards are slower than the memory on the board itself, and when your talking about how fast these modern phones process photos, and the demands of some of these apps, i can see why a company would not want to give the user the tools to self sabotage.

If the Pixel/,XL were priced $200.00 less people would still complain - it is what they do. "Priced too high" usually translates to "I can't afford it"

Not really true.. I can easily afford it and even after first saying I wouldn't I ended up buying one anyway... The way I compared it was looking at what I had in the 6p and comparing it to what the Pixel is. I've now had my Pixel a week and I do like it a lot. But I still have my 6p and based off the cost of the device compared to the 6p when it was brand new I personally do not think the Pixel is that much of an upgrade over the 6p... but you know Samsung and Apple are no different.. They come out with new devices year after year that are not major jumps in technology and specs. The only difference is the Samsung and Apple devices have always been priced kind of high. Since the Nexus 4 the prices of a Google flagship device has always been really awesome bang for your buck. Granted we all justified some of the short comings of the 4 - 6p because they were cheaper in comparison to the iPhone or Galaxy S lines..

Only time will tell if the Pixel has any major short comings. I have a few buggy things going on with mine that I am sure will get fixed in the coming months as they push out small updates to the device. Pretty much all of those kind of bugs were already fixed with the 6p.... Just typical growing pains of being one of the first to have............................

This is my second day owning the XL and I became accustomed to dealing with bugs or quirks. However, I only have so much tolerance. Eventually I would get frustrated and upset over user experience. iPhone has the same problem.

Funny though, my droid turbo had the most issues attempting to handle ad traffic and all the different ways it's implemented on websites.

I have no problem paying for a device that brings the user experience back to the forefront. Matter of fact, is less stress and piece of mind that I don't have to plan ahead based on device quirks. Now Android users can say "it just works"

Poorly designed Apps and built in ad traffic will continue to plague us though

Ah yeah so for current subscribers it's good but new cannot get that deal.

Pretty sure that new customers can do it in stores even though not publicly advertised. If you are on a current plan, you would have to pay$20/ mo more for 24 months or$480... For a$450 savings.

It makes more sense for legacy plans where the line access charge doesn't change when on or off contract

But can't you say that about other smartphones? I can look at the iPhone and say no headphone jack, no SD card slot, no full HD screen, out worked charging but it costs a premium price. I can go down the line and pick apart every smartphone. It's about the experience you get and what it is worth to you. Is he the Pixel worth it to me? Absolutely. I've used iPhones and Nexus phones for years. SD card slots aren't a priority. Neither is waterproofing. I've only had one smartphone that was waterproof and that was the Note 7. If I really needed it to be waterproof, I can buy a waterproof case. Wireless charging I can take it or leave it. But what I get in place of all of those things are valuable.

Exactly. Everything is missing something that something else have. The S7 is missing a sturdier metal body, Assistant, DayDream, a 128 GB option, support for USB-C Power Delivery, seamless updates, file level encryption, etc, etc.

Most devices have something about them that’s unique and all devices have something about them that’s missing, relative to the total pool of options.

Samsung phones come with much more to justify the price. The price of the Pixels isn't justified.

I have bought many Samsung phones and also other manufactures. Having used the Pixel I disagree and think it is justified :).

You can disagree that the Pixel isn't worth the price, but you can't disagree that the Samsungs don't come with far more that justifies their price. That is an objective fact.

Actually I can disagree on it -- Just because someone tosses a bunch of crap onto it doesn't make it better. "More things" doesn't equal "worth the price" in my book.
