Forgotten Pixel XL password

I usually unlock my one-week-old Pixel XL with my fingerprint.

This morning, in my early-morning fog, I must have touched something I shouldn't have, and it asked me for my "emergency" password. I don't remember setting up such a thing.

I have now tried every password possibility and I've FAILED totally.

Is a factory reset my only resort?

Thanks!

You are probably out of luck.

And, for the next time, please remember these important facts:
  1. Whenever you reboot your phone, you *must* enter your password. Fingerprint will not work immediately following reboot
  2. Every so often (I'm really not sure what the schedule is) your phone will demand that you enter your password. In fact, you probably didn't accidentally do anything at all - it was just time for the phone to insist on your password

So - today's lesson is, don't forget your password.

Thanks. The other lesson is: turn on Location, so that Android Device Manager can help you create a temporary password. That would have saved me from a hard reset.
