Sign up for an account, install the app. When you run it the first time, it will walk you through setting up your voicemail

What isn't being said is that you'll need to have callers call the GV number - NOT your original phone number. Still, GV works great for visual gmail purposes and saves $36 per year.

To do free visual voice mail you just forward you missed calls to your GV number ... Callers still call your normal mobile number.

GV can't automatically set the forwarding on the Galaxy Nexus VZ, you need to register the phone on the Google Voice webpage and follow the instructions. You may have to go into the settings and change the voicemail carrier as well so holding 1 goes directly to GV instead of VZ. You can find this setting by launching PHONE and then menu/settings. It's not on the main system settings like previous version of android.
