New to Android on a Galaxy Nexus

Hello,
So my contract was due and I jumped ships to the Android Universe. I love this new phone specially watching media on the screen. Its beautiful.
Coming from a jail-broken iPhone 4 things are pretty different so I'm having a rough time adjusting.
I have one issue that is almost a deal breaker for me. I can't assign my volume rocker keys the next/previous track options as I did with my old phone.
My gnex is stock but I'm willing to root/rom my device in order to get that priceless functionality back.
Any help appreciated.

I'm using PlayerPro, it's a media playing app and it has a setting to allow it when the phone is locked. The AOKP rom I am using also has a similar setting.
