Questions about Jelly Bean OTA and root access

Got a couple of questions regarding the OTA 4.1 update that Google has started rolling out and what it means with the root access on my phone. Haven't had an Android that accepts OTA updates, so I'm unsure how it works exactly...

1. I'm only rooted. Still using the stock 4.0.4 ROM. So I should still get the notification to upgrade to 4.1 once it's pushed to my phone, correct?

2. If yes, is it safe to upgrade while rooted? Or once I get the notification to upgrade, should I un-root? Or will it just automatically un-root itself during the update process and then I'll have to re-root afterward?

Thanks for any clarification.

Having root on the device shouldn't keep you from getting OTA, but once you flash a different ROM and kernel, that's when you won't be getting the OTAs. After you do update though, there is a chance that you will not have root anymore though.

So you shouldn't have any problems running the OTA, as well as getting the OTA with root. Hope this helps, cheers.

So there is no need to un-root before upgrading to 4.1? I am just unsure if that's safe to do.

I'm fully prepared that either way I'll have to root again once I'm running Jelly Bean, just whether or not I should un-root or just let the OTA un-root it for me (if that will work).

Nope you will be fine to update with root, just check and see if you have root still after the update. I've done it twice so far and have retained root, but I see some people that lose root after updating.

I guess I can explain a little. Think of root as just administrator permissions to access deeper parts of your phone. It won't hinder you from updating, because its just permissions that you wouldn't normally have.

Right, ok thanks for the help.

I'll just go right on with the update as soon as it's pushed to me.

That'd be great if I retain root. Not that it's hard to do or anything :)

I went back to stock 4.0.4, then manually applied the 4.1.1 update through stock recovery and I lost root. But as mentioned, not a big deal.

I lost root as well, but obviously that's not a big deal. I'll just root again when I feel like it.
