Nexus tethering / home network question
Is there a way to use the tethering/hotspot to provide internet thru a wireless router?
The reason I ask is due to having access to my printer and file server through my wireless router. I lose that if i just flip over to the nexus hotspot.
I guess the simplest way would be to get another wireless adapter for my laptop but wondered if there was a more seamless solution. - 07-19-2012, 09:43 PM #2

Re: Nexus tethering / home network question
So you're wanting to have your printer and computer on your wifi tether?

Have you tried to connect your laptop, and then enter in your printer IP to your phone as well?

Re: Nexus tethering / home network question
I'm still not following. Why are you wanting to tether if you have your wifi right there?
I guess the short answer is "no". With the hotspot active, you have to share the 3g. Your phone can't be using wifi for data and be a hotspot at the same time. If you enable the hotspot, it uses the 3g service for internet. - 07-21-2012, 01:03 AM #7
Re: Nexus tethering / home network question
If I'm understanding correctly, he wants to have his phone become the internet connection for the router, and still be able to access the items attached to the router, such as a printer. Aka make his phone simply take the place of the modem and serve internet to the router.
I don't know how you'd accomplish this.LG Nexus 4 // T-Mobile - 07-21-2012, 08:43 AM

Re: Nexus tethering / home network question
That probably sums it up better than I did.
Although found out I'd have to cut my internet usage in half to fit in a mobile plan that saved any money going that route so probably a no go even if I could come up with a way to accomplish it.
Changing IP on printer is a thought. If that route becomes viable at some point I'll have to try that. - 07-21-2012, 02:37 PM #9
Re: Nexus tethering / home network question
Oh, ok, i gotcha now.
I can think of a couple of ways, but as you guessed, it's probably not economical.
My first thought is to use USB tethering between your phone and your laptop and the wifi to your router. I've never used usb tethering, but if the phone shows up as a network adapter, you might be able to use Internet Connection Sharing in Windows to allow the other computers to access the internet.
The catch is your have to tell the other computers to use your laptop as the default gateway. If your router allows you to specify an alternate gateway address in the dhcp config, it's easier. If not you'd have to use static ip addresses on your devices.
