Do we need a kernel for Jelly Bean?

So, I just upgraded to 4.1.1, then I rooted my phone. After that I looked up some kernels (Franco, Lean, Air, etc.) But as I was reading the change logs and features, I thought to myself, do I really need one?

Up til now, my phone has been blazingly fast and battery life isn't great, but good enough. So why use a kernel? For a ''mainstream'', non-developer user such as myself? Why care about overclocking undervolting and so on? Or am I not getting the idea of what a kernel really does?

Please share your thoughts on the subject.

I use it personally, and love it. I have the cpu and pgu overclocked, so the smoothness of JB is just enhanced. It really is nice, and a lot you can do. Customize the voltage for better battery, change the ColorControl on your phone so you have better colors, etc. Its pretty sweet :)

Oh so can you for example fix (or diminish) the yellowish tint of the screen with some kind of setting? Also what are your cpu, pgu and volt tweaked to?

Yep! I have another thread here about what my color settings are here

My CPU is 1536 (1.5), min is 384. GPU is 512. Voltages are 1375mV max, and 1025 mV min. I can get the CPU up to 1804 (1.8), but I'm not that adventurous. :p

I held off from Franco's kernels initially because the stock JB one was frankly smoother.

Lately though his have really picked up and I get very good performance and battery life. I'm using the 384 one personally and the ondemand governor.

Like others have said, there are a lot of color tweaks and OC customizations on FK that you just don't get on stock so I'd recommend it:)
