Considering Galaxy Nexus: Should I Wait?
Hi all,
I own a shiny new Google Nexus 7 (my first real Android-powered device and love it - I've used android devices in the past, I just didn't buy/own them.) I really LOVE the clean, pure Jelly Bean experience so much that I've been very tempted to buy the Galaxy Nexus to replace my aged iPhone 3S.
I was initially interested in the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note but I really don't like Samsung's UI (Touch Wiz or whatever) and how long it takes to get official updates for it compared to Nexus devices. So I've settled basically on the GNex due to the pure Jelly Bean experience but its a YEAR+ old phone selling at $400 with tax and shipping... Paying a premium for kinda aged hardware isn't something I'm happy about so...
I've been watching, very, very closely, every new manufacturer event, IFC and smartphone announcement hoping something "pure Jelly Bean" with upgraded hardware would be released/announced but NOTHING!!! Google doesn't seem in the least bit concerned with updating and refreshing the Nexus smartphone line... But EVENTUALLY they will, right?
TL;DR: Should I take the plunge and spend my hard earned $400 cash on kinda "old" hardware (I'm contract-free and refuse to sign a contract to get a discount on a phone and I also don't want to deal with carrier BS, delays in updates or no updates!)...
OR wait only God knows much longer for Google to finally release a new Nexus updated smartphone?
Note, I said RELEASE. An announce is great but means little if I still have to wait 3 months or more to get my hands on it.
TIA for any advice or insight you can offer me.

Re: Considering Galaxy Nexus: Should I Wait?
I didn't wait. I was in the same boat as you, but I decided to go for it. I haven't regretted my decision. The Galaxy Nexus is a very capable phone and when I weighed the pros/cons I decided that $350+ was worth it. I'm loving the experience.

Re: Considering Galaxy Nexus: Should I Wait?
Hi and thanks for your input. I'm so tempted to buy the Gnex right this second but I'm trying to be "good" and get other user's input first, lol!
I've waited sooooo long to upgrade from my iPhone that waiting any longer for a new Nexus smartphone to be released feels like complete torture...
If I take the plunge it will be the US GSM variant. I've read that there is a European GSM version that has a quad-core. Is the Euro version faster than the US dual-core GSM version?

I know you want to go gem and unlocked route. I have a gnexus on sprint and with the jellybean update, its the icing on the cake for me. Also I found a promotion for a Samsung 2100mah battery from sprint with the code Battery1, free (shipping) while supplies last and got mine today!

Re: Considering Galaxy Nexus: Should I Wait?
I am on VZW and can upgrade in Nov but I want leave and get a Unlocked GSM Nexus. I also want to go back to T-mobile but in end my contract doesn't end until March.
Having a Thunderbolt is not as old as your iPhone 3G but having N7 makes envious of stock android. I had G1 back in day and wish I never jumped on the LTE ban waggon because so don't even use LTE.
I feel silly that I can't be patience and just wait for my contract to expire. Sadly my patiences is running and I have thought of upgrading to the best phone in Nov so I can sell it on Ebay. Hopefully then I make enough on Ebay to get out of my contract so I will be free to get whatever Nexus smartphone is out.

Re: Considering Galaxy Nexus: Should I Wait?
Forgive me, but unless you're a Jedi and have some mystical clairvoyance that the rest of us lack, please provide us with an answer as to how you know this. There has been ZERO information concerning a new Nexus... only speculation based on wishful thinking. If there is some proof you can point us to, please oblige.

Re: Considering Galaxy Nexus: Should I Wait?
Thank you for clearing that up, Andrew. I know there are different versions like CDMA one with 32 GBs. Why did Samsung screw over the GSM version with only 16 GBs and a smaller battery?!

Agreed.
Like I said in my I initial post, I have been watching every announcement, news blip, event, etc. All I've been able to get a wiff of is some weird old spreadsheet screenshot that looks like last year's Samsung possible devices. Only the Gnex came out of it so... I don't believe its credible at all.
But if anyone have any source they think is halfway decent please link me? Thank you.

Re: Considering Galaxy Nexus: Should I Wait?
They didn't really "screw over" anyone. The CDMA model is thicker because of the additional LTE components and for that reason had room for the extra 16GB of storage and a 100mAh (about 5%) larger battery. The storage discrepancy may be an issue for some people (certainly not for me), but the battery is just a laughable difference. Even with the larger battery, the CDMA/LTE model gets worse battery life than the GSM one.

Re: Considering Galaxy Nexus: Should I Wait?
I consider giving the CDMA-people an extra 16 GBs for free indeed "screwing over" GSM folks. Why not charge less for the GSM model or use the casing (with the extra space for battery and 32 GBs) for the GSM model too and give the GSM version both the larger battery AND extra storage? Makes sense to me... Its dodgy to do otherwise yet charge the same exact price for less.
This is something I'm taking I to consideration, mind you... we shall see...

Re: Considering Galaxy Nexus: Should I Wait?
The new nexus will probably cost $499 with taxes and shipping you will probably looking close to 600 out of your wallet. Or was it $399 but still half a K is lot of money. I paid 390 for a new on craiglist because i didnt want to wait for fedex or ups. I actually spend only 90 bucks on it because i sold i727 for 300 dollars.

Re: Considering Galaxy Nexus: Should I Wait?
You are thinking the Galaxy S3 not Galaxy Nexus...
And honestly I'd wait for the next one. Rumor has it there are multiple phones, and with as you said the US market has been gimped a little I'd wait to see if we start getting some proper quad core phones. Also, keep in mind that the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have removable storage which is a big issue for some people (like me). - 09-18-2012, 06:21 AM #21
Re: Considering Galaxy Nexus: Should I Wait?
None of us know when the next Nexus will be out. Previous two versions were released with introduction of new versions of the OS. Jelly Bean came out and Google released no phone. or info on new Nexus phone, instead choosing to release the Nexus 7 with Jelly Bean. This means that they (possibly) have changed the way they release the phones so we have no clue as to what will be done this year, hence no real leaks regarding a new Nexus phone (other than sheer speculation or rumor). I personally would wait if possible, but that's just my opinion. If you decide to pull the trigger now then you can always sell the Galaxy Nexus on eBay or Craigslist when the new one comes out. In the meantime, you would be able to enjoy that Jelly Bean goodness on it until we hear something official from Google.

Re: Considering Galaxy Nexus: Should I Wait?
Check on Craigslist for a used one. I have seen plenty of Nexus, both GSM & LTE, listed in the 200-300 range. Keeps you from being locked into any new contracts.

Re: Considering Galaxy Nexus: Should I Wait?
You will likely have a great experience with the GNex because it's a little older and has all the bugs worked out by now. The specs are more than capable of taking you a couple years without feeling regret. As someone that bought a Thunderbolt shortly after they came out and a Nexus 7 recently I can state firmly that the TBolt was terrible at first but eventually came around to be a decent device for what it was advertised and the Nexus 7 although a great device actually took about a month for all my apps to become Jelly Bean compliant. So in a sense it pays to not be the first one to own a device to avoid some of the manufacturing and buggy app issues. Oh, I also went through two Nexus 7 returns because of faulty manufacturing. I loved it from the start and the return system was great but the issues with a dead pixel line and rebooting couldn't be tolerated. Love Android though. The hardware and operating system keep getting better and better with amazing speed.

Re: Considering Galaxy Nexus: Should I Wait?
Get a GNEX on eBay or Craigslist for now (if you have the $$ and can't wait), and wait to see what is announced concerning a new Nexus phone in the next couple months. There are lots of rumors swirling about that a Nexus may be forthcoming from a variety of mfgs, so there's a chance you could have LOTS of choices by November/December. If nothing new is released (which I doubt), you could already have a Nexus phone running JB from eBay/Craigslist.

If you wait, you'll always be waiting. There's always something "better" around the corner.
