Custom notification mp3 works, but not custom ringtone mp3

I'm trying to set custom mp3 sounds as ringtone and SMS tone. I succeeded in the latter, quite easily, but I can't quite seem to figure out how to be able to select anything else than the default ringtones.

I put two mp3's in the folders:
/storage/emulated/0/Ringtones
/storage/emulated/0/Notifications
one in each folder

In Settings -> Sound -> Default Notification (sorry, if this is not the exact wording; I'm on a phone set to language Danish), I can select both mp3 files along with the "bundled" notification tones.

However, in Settings -> Sound -> Ringtone for phone I can't select any of the mp3's - only the bundled ringtones.

My phone's a Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.2.1

Am I doing something wrong? I guess this shouldn't be so hard after all?

I'm not sure where those folder are coming from. On my phone running a stock 4.2.1 it is simply /ringtones.

Those are the paths as reported by Ghost Commander. The part before "Ringtones" is where I get to by default (the emulated sd card dir?) when I launch Ghost Commander, so I guess we're talking about the same location.

I am also on a Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.2.1

Navigating through ES File Explorer I have all my items in these folders as needed:

/sdcard/Ringtones/
/sdcard/Notifications/

And everything works just fine.

Are you sure they are in MP3 format?

I just installed the ES File Explorer just to make sure we are indeed talking about the same location in the file hierarchy, and it does indeed report the location of my two directories (which I didn't create myself, btw.) as /sdcard/

which is a bit weird since the phone doesn't even have an sd card slot, but nevermind :)

Oh, and yes, they are indeed genuine mp3 files. They are both playable as notification sounds, but not as ringtones. I made them in Audacity years ago for use on my old Nokia phone that I had at the time.

All I have left for you then is to suggest rebooting the phone maybe?

Another shot in the dark. Corrupted MP3 file? Open them in audacity and save them as MP3 with a slightly different name? Then add them to your phone with the new file name in the appropriate folder.

I recall having to do this with one file a long time ago on my Nokia.

What so you see as the file structure when you hook it up to your PC?
