Compared to other skins, for example TouchWiz, or stock Android, the additional layer of processing that EMUI puts on the OS makes for a bit of a slowdown and higher battery usage.
Touchwiz is a pretty heavy skin. Emui might be heavier but tw isn't far behind

That's interesting to know. If it's heavy, does that mean that it is bad? I don't understand this. If the power modes are sufficient, I'm guessing that the heaviness should be a non-factor though?

Well it would depend on what is added. A heavy skin doesn't necessarily use more battery life. my 5x (heavy skin) got excellent battery life, better than my moto g4 (light skin). Both have 3000mah battery, and snapdragon 616/617 and 2gb ram, 5.5" 1080p screen.

The 5x is coded to favor battery life, Moto g4 to favor performance.
