On my old Samsung s5 I could put a mp3 file into the notifications directory and I was good to go. I've searched here and elsewhere and can't find the solution. For the life of me I can't find the notifications folder on the HTC 10. Even installed Textra pro thinking that would allow me to add custom files to the messages but I only see the default tones.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

What I was trying to accomplish was custom sound notifications for messages from particular contacts. The solution took the combination of Textra Pro and ES File Explorer.

In textra you open a contacts conversation. Select V then "Customize the conversation" then Notifications then Notification Sound. Before the installation of ES File Explorer the only option available was the default notification sounds. After ES File Explorer's installation, you're asked which app to use for the Textra Notification sound selection. Select ES File Explorer and navigate to and select the mp3 file you want. voilà
