friend gave me his old phone to use with my wifi but i cant get text apps to work on it

My friend gave me his old phone so I could use it with my wifi at home. I am now able to download apps after buying a new micro sim card, I cant get texting apps to work on it.
I think its because his old number is somewhere on the phone and the registration processes are trying to reach me through the number on the phone (which obviously isn't in service anymore).
How do I fix this?

Phone is htc desire pb9940

You won't be able to do SMS since that is carrier based, you should be able to do other IM services that do not rely on a phone number but need a data connection.
