I have the eris and i want to get the X but i found out i had to re new my 2 year contract to get it. is this true?? And i barely have a year in my old contract.

Any time that you purchase a new phone from Verizon at a discounted price, you're getting a contract.

You can always buy the Droid X at full price without subsidy and keep your old contract if you wish. It is, however, $570 as I type this. But, you can do that and keep your existing contract.
