Can you delete Gmail app???

When I receive emails to my gmail account it goes to the android mail app and gmail app resulting in two notifications and double the deleting!!! i would prefer to use android app and not gmail.

no, its part of the system, even if you root, I think you still need it.

but if you get root access (break the phone) then you can delete ANYTHING you want... but that doesn't mean your phone will work if you remove ANY app. heh.

If you want to disable the GMail, just go into it, hit menu, uncheck everything but mailing the Email Notification.

I second the poll suggestion. And agree that the Gmail app is better in general.

By the way, I actually use my primary Gmail account to access six or seven other Gmail accounts. Some are old ones I had ages ago, one is a junk mail account I use to sign up for newsletters, etc, and two are work related (two jobs, sigh...).

Anyway, I have linked the accounts via the Gmail settings section, so I can send from those accounts using my primary Gmail account. I also receive duplicate messages from those, delivered to the primary inbox.

Then I have a set of filters that automatically archive (skip the inbox) messages from those alternate accounts and apply easy to follow labels. So from the web, I can quickly see which of those accounts have new stuff.

This works great with the Android Gmail app, because I set the phone up to sync those folders/labels. From the Gmail app, I can hit the Menu button, select View Labels, and easily see which of the alternate accounts have new messages.

The best thing is that since my Gmail account is set up to auto archive those messages, I don't get constant updates every time I get a new spammy message. I only see them when I want to check, leaving my primary account for really important stuff, personal messages, etc.

How to stop double notification and only receive gmail notification

This is what works on an HTC EVO 4G

From the main mail icon on main screen, select your gmail account. Then click on menu>more>settings>notification settings. Uncheck email notifications.

From all apps menu select gmail icon. Then click menu>more>settings. Scroll down to notification settings. Check the box next to email notifications.

Android GMail is designed to be your primary, your only, e-mail client. For me it is not; it is a seconary client which could be useful when I'm not near my PC. And Android GMail does not have the options to make it a decent secondary E-mail tool. I hate it so much I'd like to kill it. Anyone know what the Linux binary is named?

Ok, you have to decide: do you want Thunderbird to see every message, or do you want GMail and Thunderbird to stay in sync?

It sounds like you area accessing your account using POP rather than IMAP on Thunderbird. If you want to synchronize your mail, so that anything that you read on TBird is marked as read on GMail, and anything that you delete on TBird does not appear in GMail on Android, then you are also gong to have to live with the fact that if you delete a message in Gmail, it will be deleted in Thunderbird as well.

If this is the case, then you can continue to use POP on Thunderbird, and that's fine, but that makes all of your mail download to Thunderbird and any actions that you take on it - reading, deleting - will not be communicated back to Gmail, so the GMail app on Android will look to be downloading duplicate messages. However, if you want everything to stay in sync, you first need to enable IMAP access in Gmail on the web (go into a web browser, attach to your Gmail account, click the "Gear" icon on the top right, select "Settings", go to "Forwarding and POP/IMAP", and make sure that IMAP is enabled. Then you will have to set up your Gmail account in Thunderbird as an IMAP rather than POP connection (I would create a new account - you can always delete the POP account later, but if you do not like IMAP, you can easily go back to the POP account if you create a new one.)

Now, anything that you do in Thunderbird - read mail, reply to it, delete it - will be synchronized with Gmail on the web and, hence, GMail in Android.

If you don't want to delete it but simply want to stop using it, you can always go into (from home) settings->accounts & sync->your gmail account ad uncheck Gmail from syncing options - this will stop Gmail delivery to your phone (unless you go into GMail and hit menu->refresh.)

If you are rooted and really want to stop it, the gmail.apk file is in /system/apps/gmail.apk. I'd rename it with Root Explorer before deleting it, in case the phone crashes without the app.

Let me also warn you that if you are not using GMail on the phone, the stock mail client has an issue that it never releases storage space taken up by messages even if you delete them and empyt the trash. I recommend using the free app K-9 mail in the market instead.

This is a forum for the HTC Droid Eris, which came out in November 2009 which runs Android version 2.1, cannot run any of the last three versions of the GMail app, and will likely not be seen by many people. You may want to ask this question instead in the forum for whichever phone (or tablet) you have.

I'VE JUST FOUND THAT RESETTING YOUR CELLPHONE CONFIG TO FACTORY VALUES, GOING TO PRIVACY SETTINGS, IS THE ONLY WAY TO COMPLETELY DELETE YOUR GMAIL ACCOUNT FROM MOBILE DEVICE.

I typically install rom and gapps with some apk removed from the zip file - like gmail, currents, magazines etc. I use email client like maildroid. So I can see all my mails in 1 page. Works fine. Gmail can be removed with no issues. You can install from play store later if needed.

Well, I guess I am not a "smart person", because I absolutely hate gmail and I always have. I have never had anything but problems with it.
I only got one again recently because I needed to change my email address on a website and didn't have a secondary email.
I have just deleted all my google accounts and my gmail account, due to security issues, so I really don't want anything connected
to these accounts on my computer or my phone. However, it's still appearing on my phone with the username and everything,
because of the gmail app.

Is there a way to remove the app entirely? What do I need the app for if I don't even use gmail?

Everything I've read on every site I've looked for an answer to this question on, including this one, says to go to "Accounts and Sync".
My phone doesn't have that in the Settings. :/

I also do not see the model of my phone listed here, or anywhere else.

I am using a ZTE Whirl.

Can anyone help?

this stupid app makes it so if others use the tablet, they are all in your emails. ZERO privacy. An assumption on googles controlling manipulative part, that everyone has personal tablets. Even still, i want to be able to sign out of ANYTHING I DANG WELL WANNA. I also want to be able to DELETE ANYTHING I DANG WELL WANNA. im a big boy, i can go to gmail on a regular browser and sign in and out without an app. Im not retarded. The youtube app is the same way. You open a browser on the tablet, SIGN IN ON THAT BROWSER...watch a video, and poof, youre signed into an app for YouTube! And since Google likes to be so 'helpful' they repost whatever you watch or search for all over the godda** tablet. ZERO privacy. Even if you're not signed in on a desktop, YouTube will make 'suggestions' for what to watch based on whomever searched for whatever before you....ZERO PRIVACY...THEN sign in on Facebook, and ads follow based on it. Did I say that if you tell Google you're an adult age, it assumes you're fine with porn results or adult gaming ads?! Image search for something, and porn will be in the results if you're signed in as an adult. THEY DONT KNOW who is using what in someones home...just allow people to sign out without auto signing in crap! Or if you sign in here...we assume you'd like to be signed in there, there and there! So the tablet signs u into your Gmail, and youre reading... then you sign out in the browser, but Mr app still has u signed in. Someone goes to YouTube, and poof, there you are...signed in....ZERO PRIVACY. NO...TABLETS DONT HAVE TO ASSUME TO BE INDIVIDUALLY USED.
