tethering
okay.... just switched from blackberry to htc 3d.... and learning.
dumb question. I see the temp root, but nothing perm yet. I see sprint is charging for mobile hotspot. Do I need to root to make a mobile hotspot?
If so are HTC/Sprint trying to block this once a perm root is found. Can they OTA update and block tethering once installed?
thanks for any help.
Also anywhere I can start reading for beginner access to file level apps, ect to start learning the device. - 07-07-2011, 02:49 PM #2Thanked by:

Re: tethering
I tried this after the temp root and it said that it failed, any ideas why?

Re: tethering
Ha! I was just about to post this... Got my 3D last night, root works fine, but Wireless Tether is no joy... in the log file it shows that everything works except "Activating WiFi Interface... failed." I've been searching but haven't found any answers yet. I was thinking of trying the beta version of Wireless Tether 3.1.

Re: tethering
Yes I'm using the temp root and I verified with multiple root-only apps that I was in fact rooted. I tried Barnacle but couldn't get it to work either. I know that Barnacle only does ad hoc WiFi but I was able to connect to my laptop via ad hoc WiFi using Wireless Tether on my "old" Evo 4G, so that's not the issue.

Re: tethering
how about a detailed step by step instruction to getting barnacle to work.
it's been a year now and i've never been able to make it happen on my evo. - 07-11-2011, 04:58 PM #13

Re: tethering
ok, android newbie here but just got the evo 3d about a week ago and plugged it via usb into my pc, chose the option usb tethering, switched to the local access network once the driver was installed and viola...Im on the internet!
Free and simple...or is it??
my question, is this tethering free or am I being charged for this? I did not sign up for the $30 hotspot plan. - 07-17-2011, 06:56 PM #15

Re: tethering
Wireless Tether will give you that error message but just ignore it and tethering works anyway.... well sometimes it works perfectly and sometimes it doesn't work at all, everything connects but no data flows. (And yes of course I know that you have to re-root after every restart and maybe more frequently than that.)
