Root 1.4, then update?

So I've been looking and haven't found a straight answer.

I'm getting a replacement 3D tomorrow and I'm hoping it doesn't have 1.5 on it so I can root. My question is if I root it with 1.3 or 1.4, can I install the updates and still be rooted?

not sure about your question, but just to keep you optimistic, i just got my evo 3d two days ago from best buy and it was 1.3 bootloader

No, you should not take updates once rooted. You will have issues and possibly loose root. Are you planning to flash a custom rom? If so, then the rom developer updates the rom shortly after an update hits - usually.

Not sure yet if I'm going to flash a custom rom. I flashed a few on my Evo4G, but I'm pretty happy with the 3D stock.

cleanrom is really nice and simple, nothing stupid and a few more features than the regular htc one (noticeably when holding down the power/lock button)
