I have a stock EVO 3D (Android 2.3.4, HTC Sense 3.0, Software Number 2.17.651.5) and I am finally deciding to root it. The only reason I want to root is because I want to use wireless tethering. I did the same with my old OG EVO, but that was like 2 years ago and I was using the Unrevoked method. I need to get up to speed with what new (or existing) root methods are available today, and which one would be the "best" (quick and easy) one for me? Thanks.

Revolutionary won't work on his. He is 2.17 therefore he has hboot 1.5.
There are 2 choices.
HTC unlock through HTC.
Downgrade his hboot. This is pretty simple,yet can be pretty scary. You are intentionally bricking the phone as part of the process. After this method you then can use Revolutionary.

If all you ever would want to do is root, I guess the HTC unlock is the fastest and easiest way to go.

I personally would "brick" it and do the downgrade, but I also do more things with my unlocked phone than simply tether.
