Got my MHL cable... no sound
My MHL cable was delivered today. It works great displaying what is on the Evo to my non 3D tv. Even the Green Hornet is rendered very clearly in 2D without me having to do anything special. The problem is there is no sound! Does anyone know if this is expected? Makes it sort of useless for movie / videos. Btw, i purchased the cable through Expansys.

Re: Got my MHL cable... no sound
I got my MHL cable from Expansys and I can't get it to work. No video, no sound, nothing. I plugged the microUSB end into my phone, plugged my charging cable into the side of the MHL cable, then plugged my HDMI cable from my TV into the other end of the MHL cable. Nothing. That's how you're supposed to do it, right?
When you plug the charging cable into the side of the MHL cable and you plug that into your phone, does your phone show it as charging? Mine doesn't. - 07-22-2011, 12:53 PM

Re: Got my MHL cable... no sound
That it's how I got mine to work. It only works if the charging cable is attached. It shows as charging and a notification comes up on phone stating hdmi is connected.

The power cable must be attached. Try rebooting your phone too.

Re: Got my MHL cable... no sound
I got my MHL cable from the T-Mobile store yesterday and used the 50% off coupon. Hooked it up to my Vizio LCD and was able to stream Netflix and SprintTV. Worked great.

Has anyone come put with a solution to this? ... besides using headphone jack? I still haven't been able to get it to work. Thanks

Re: Got my MHL cable... no sound
I called Sprint support. They told me to call HTC because it's a phone issue.
I called HTC support. After powering off and on the phone and it still not working, they stated I have to reset the phone and said there is nothing else they can do. They said they had no record in their system of anyone else reporting this. If you experience this issue, please call HTC so it's recorded. I'm thinking this is a software bug.
Not too happy with the HTC support today. - 07-29-2011, 07:09 PM #18
Re: Got my MHL cable... no sound
Went by the Sprint store since one was not to be found around here at t-mobile or anywhere else. They gave me a 25% discount, added it to my bill and had it shipped to me for free. Should be here Monday. Pretty cool of them!
Paying more than t-mo's 10.00 instore but cheaper than ordering online from t-mobile for full price and then paying tax and shipping.
Please thank me if I have helped!

Re: Got my MHL cable... no sound
I have not been able to get sound from my MHL cable still, when connected to my TV. Has anyone confirmed that it should work with sound and video? Thanks

Re: Got my MHL cable... no sound
Yes. I just got the MHL adapter from Expansys and can confirm that the HDMI connection transmits both audio and video. Its required to plug the power cable into a wall adaptor, not a PC usb port. I used the OEM HTC charger with the MHL and it worked fine.
Now if I can only figure out what video standards are required for the 3Vo to play. - 08-19-2011, 02:38 PM #23
Re: Got my MHL cable... no sound
Some where else (possible XDA) I thought I read that this was related to the SpiderMan game. Have you played SpiderMan and when playing turned the volume all the way down? If so I think the solution was to start SpiderMan up and turn the volume up in the game itself then quit the game and your HDMI sound will work.
Let us know if this fixes it. - 08-27-2011, 01:09 PM #24
Re: Got my MHL cable... no sound
I bought an T-mobile HTC Sensation 4G. I also bought a Menotek Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter to connect to my HDTV (Samsung). Like a number of you, I have the problem that the video shows up beautifully, but there is no audio, except via the 3.5 mm headset jack. I was wondering whether there is some kind of toggle that directs the sound output between one of three places: 1) the phone speakers (pretty feeble), 2) the headset jack, 3) the audio link on the MHL adapter. One of the reasons I think this is the case is that one time when I connect the adapter to the HDTV, audio did work. But, never again. This suggests that audio can be transmitted via the adapter and that some switch has been switched on or off unintentionally. I noticed in past threads that others were talking about a headset toggle problem with an older version of Android. Anyone have any insights/thoughts on this?
Update (9/4/2011): I sent the Menotek adapter back (I bought it on Amazon), and I received a "new" one a week later. Unfortunately, it behaved identically to the first one. It worked initially, then never again. Like the first one, the new adapter does play sound out the 3.5 mm headset output. Once again, I am wondering whether there is a software toggle that is used (intentionally or unintentionally) to switch the audio output among the possible paths.
Last night, I called Fry's Electronics to check whether they had a microusb hdmi mhl adapter, and they said they had three in stock. So, I drove on over. To make a long story short, after one and a half hours looking all over the vast shop -- assisted by five separate shop assistant and even the manager -- I was unable to find the adapters. It was unclear why the inventory system indicated that they had three in stock, when no one could locate them.Last edited by rjhpc7; 09-04-2011 at 01:13 PM. Reason: update
