Anyone find a way yet to make the hardware shutter button open the camera app? I'd like to be able to remove the camera shortcut from my home screen if this is possible.

You have to hold the button down for a couple seconds before it opens the app.

Just hold it down and it launches the camera. Screen has to be unlocked though.

Ill have to give that a try. i was surprised when playing with a demo that the shutter button didnt activate it. My concern with that even doing so was launching the camera erroneously in pocket or something.
Sounds like HTC actually thought ahead by doing a long press for activation.
