Truth be told, unless Samsung manages to completely blow my mind on May 22nd, with the GS3, I will probably be picking this thing up on Launch day and giving up my precious Evo 3D. I will miss the 3D functionality. :(

I'm hoping that HTC figures out how to incorporate that awesome camera in a 3D package while managing to keep the slim profile of the LTE next time around. I have a bunch of memorable 3D pics and video that will now be usless (I guess I can save them as 2d shots) until at least the next iteration of Evo.

You're not alone. I will miss the 3D if I move to this. I love the EVO 3D. Without the 3D it was on of the best phones out last year and still holds up just fine. But I really enjoy the 3D camera and use it a lot. If the pic doesn't come out great in 3D, they let me convert and save it to 2D right on the phone! If the screen had better viewing angles, like the 3DS, it might not have gotten bashed as much. People call it a gimmick but I don't think that's really fair. A feature some people might not use, maybe, but a gimmick - no. Is NFC a gimmick? I don't know if I'll ever use it, but I wouldn't call it a gimmick. It's just a feature I might not use. I've never had a problem with the 3D. Watched the Green Hornet 3D and loved it from that point on. Maybe she was just a little before her time.:'(

wish I could say that I would miss it too but I just didn't use the 3D camera enough. I upgraded originally because of the specs and larger internal memory that the Evo 4G.

Sprint's mistake was calling it the Evo 3D. They should have simply called it the Evo 2, and not touted the 3D as much. They seriously misread the market with that one. The Evo 3D IS a fantastic phone even without using the 3D features. But people was disturbed by it being an OPTIONAL feature on the device (Psychological , I guess).

Did you see the yesterday's HTC/ Sprint announcement when they were talking about the design. If not, take a closer look here...

I spy a dual camera prototype that seems quite similar to the 3D!

I missed my EVO 3D and the 3D for about a day after I killed it almost 8 months ago. It really was more of a gimmick than a real feature. I bought my 2nd EVO 4G off of eBay, rooted it and have been doing just fine since then.

I miss the dual core processor, higher resolution screen and more memory than the 3D screen.

I think that the 3D feature was cool but really didn't take off like HTC and Sprint thought it would. None of the 3D devices released last year seemed to do well. I think it is a niche market. I don't think the technology is going to last in phones unless Apple releases a device with it.

That is how fickle people are. I'll bet you any kind of money that if Apple builds 3D tech in the next version of the iPhone, people are gonna act like its the best innovation since the light bulb! Why? because Apple did it "right" When it will probably be just as good as the 3DS... Then the reviewers and everyone else are gonna be all googoo and gaagaa over it...

I played around with an Evo 3D at an HTC kiosk last year, and I have to admit, the 3D worked pretty well.

However, I think in order for 3D phones/cameras to take off, it needs to be able to transfer to other devices (i.e. 3D TVs, computers, laptops, etc.) easily. It is my personal belief that in order for 3D outside of the movie theaters to take off, the consumer needs to be able to see the 3D without the use of 3D glasses, so while the Evo 3D has that, the same is not true of most 3D TVs currently in the market.

This^^...So this! I'm sure Apple will incorporate this feature into their line at some point and like Captain said, it will be all the rage and the topic of every tech blog post from iMore to Gizmodo. Personally, I think it's a little gimmicky and could care less if my tiny 4+" device has 3D capability. I'll leave that for my home theatre.

I love my evo 3d.i blow people away when i show them a picture. The videos are even better. I have made some very cool 3d videos over the last 9 months.

EVO-LUTION 3D

I love my Evo 3D and the 3D camera is cool to play with, but the picture quality without lots of light is horrible. One of the main reasons I will be upgrading is for the much improved camera on the Evo 4G LTE. I use the camera on my phone every day and want something that can take better pictures.

The sacrifice for 3D was a lower def camera, lower def display, and a small screen

Those kinds of decisions are killing HTC.

Finally HTC has a phone that can take on the GS2HD from last September and Galaxy Nexus from last November.

Instead of leading the market last summer, 3D put HTC behind by months. HTC lost billions in revenue because they bet on 3D instead of HD.

I believe more phones will have 3D as a feature and not a selling point in the future. And for those that want to show off their 3D phone, this video will cause viewers to see what 3D is all about as well as jump when the chainsaw comes for your face! ENJOY! (Obviously, you'll need to watch that from your phone.)

Personally, I am don't know if I will make the switch right away. Once a root option becomes available, I may. I live in a small town about an hour north of Atlanta. Which will be in the first area of LTE. My little town has WiMax so I use it all the time. I get about 7-8Mbps. That's plenty fast for me(for now). According to the LTE map, I will also be in the LTE area once it goes live, which makes this a hard choice not to get the Evo 4G right away. I may just wait to get a later LTE phone since I'll have WiMax coverage for a couple more years. And I get decent coverage everywhere in town. So, not in any hurry. :D

So what was available in June of last year that HTC decided not to use?

The GS2 had a better quality camera, but lower resolution screen. Interesting that you're saying they didn't bet on HD when the resolution is much better than the GS2.

The GN and any other 720p phone came out 5 months later.

You're not really making much sense though. Lower def display? At the time of its release it was the highest resolution phone released. And small screen? It's the same as everything else in its class.

The only thing HTC did wrong was show their complete lack of marketing experience and they failed to take it seriously. 3D is a fine extra feature but they failed to let people know it was optional, not always-on 3D like most people believed.

The 3D was the best quality phone on Sprint when it was released and one of the best overall based on specs alone. In June of 2011 it was plenty and even today it can hold its own.

Engadget contacted Sprint, and they said they were thinking about putting 3D in a early prototype of the Evo 4G LTE.

Is that a 3D prototype in HTC's EVO 4G LTE making of video? (update: nope) -- Engadget

But I won't miss the 3D at all. I rather have a decent camera (like the Evo 4g LTE's) then the sucky Evo 3D's 2D camera.

The 3D was fun but half baked. Bought this phone on launch day just like I did my OG Evo. EVO 3D is ok I guess but not what I had hoped for. To many things in this phone are garbage. Btw, My wife has this phone as do 7 of my friends.

1- Speaker Phone....total trash
2- Camera - total trash...maybe even worse that OG EVo
3- Video Cam - trash
4- ROM's?? No one wants to work with the EVo weird ass hardware so yeah...trash rom support other than a bunch of decent sense mods.
5- Regular Phone Mic - weak...can't hear it all the time in the car etc. Trash
6- Build quality - trash. I had about 5 nicks on the metal bezel in a few weeks. Don't think I had a single external nick on my OG Evo. Pisses me off when I look at it. I never put it in my pocket with keys either.

Now performance has been good...not much internal storage though. Screen is decent but a little washed out. Battery Life is decent.

So now, I loved HTC then they shat on everyone last year with a zillion stupid devices while Samsung got there stuff together. If I had a chance, I'd probably go SGS3.

Remember, SGS3 will be used world wide and have a zillion ROMS for it. This is a big deal. Touchwiz is balls and using an ASOP mod is so easy and nice now (ICS improvements) that you'd be a fool to call yourself techie but not root and rom your phone up (after a nice backup of course).

So...not missing the 3D and don't want it...though I was SUPER stoked when I first got it.

I will miss it especially now that I've found sick-flix.com. they have over 500 3D movies that look absolutely amazing on my EVO 3D. HTC watch on the other hand has only 7movies available in 3d almost a year after the phone was released which is ridiculous.

I think the major missteps with this phone were the way it was marketed (too much emphasis on 3d) and the lack of 3d content. I've had the original EVO and the 3D, I'll probably get this one too, but not till I get LTE. Right now in NYC I get about 10.2 down and 1.4 up which is more than sufficient to surf, stream, and download. If it could utilize wimax and LTE as was speculated on a few sites prior to its release I'd probably have it on launch day like I did with its predecessors but I'm too used to the speed, I refuse to go back to just 3g if I dont have to.
