Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but before I was rooted I don't remember there being any way to wi-fi tether just with regular app permissions since HTC's Hotspot Utility would kick in every time. Unless they're changing the way that works I think you'll need root to wi-fi tether.

I want to switch to Sprint and get this phone but the only thing holding me back is the hotspot. I don't want to pay 30$ lol. If you root then you can get the hotspot for free?

It was a good thing we did it that way, though, because we don't live in a 3G area and they wouldn't have been sold at local stores.
As long as they don't catch you. :-P

yeah basically it's fairly easy. 1. you do a simple root. 2. you just put the sdk (or hotspot app on your phone, probably found easiest at xda) and it will give you a few simple steps and you're good to go!

    P.S. that's if I recall correctly

Whoa - think I found a bug in the Android Central forums application. How did it quote something that wasn't even from this thread?
