SD card compatability (from samsung to HTC)

I currently have a Galaxy S1 Epic on sprint and plan to upgrade very soon, with a strong preference towards the new HTC Evo 4G LTE. Will all my data, contacts etc on my SD card in my Epic (with Android 2.3.6) work on the Evo? i.e. can I pop it in, reinstall the apps and still have all my saved data, my kindle books, my contacts (I back up my contacts to SD card periodically, lesson learned!) etc?

Starting over again (after bad epic update/crash) would suck.

Worse case, copy sd card to a computer, reformat card in new phone and move stuff over.

This is what titanium backup is for lol.

But to hop on this question. I just learned that for internal memory Android splits up app allocation and media/picture allocation.

If you were to put an SD card on the phone can you direct the phone to save everything media to the SD card and apps to internal?
