Pardon my ignorance but I haven't found a clear answer. I need some more info about the HTC Dev unlock. If we go this route, we get an unlocked boot loader, but not S-OFF right?

At the moment I want to install WiFi tether. Can I do this with just the HTC Dev unlock?

I would guess once available we can run revolutionary or something like it and gain full root (S-OFF) even if we've run HTC dev right?

Right, it will not 'say' S-OFF in Hboot.

You just can't flash to the boot partition (kernels) via recovery. You can still flash ROMs, apps, updates, take nandroid backups etc via recovery. Kernels must be flashed from a computer with the fastboot command.

I'm not sure. I tried revolutionary on my Evo3D and it totally screwed up my phones functionality. After many RUU's, calls to Sprint to have it reset, and 3-4 days without a phone, I finally got it back to stock. I then used the HTCDev method, and it worked perfectly and I have been very happy with it. I think I'll stick to the offical methods from here on out.

I have no idea if we will get S-OFF, and to be honest, i don't care about S-OFF due to the HTCDev method working fine for me. I THINK the app you are speaking of is just a GUI for fastboot, but I honestly have no idea. If it is based off of or is a wrapper for fastboot it should work, if not, then no. I just use the command line. typing this isnt so hard:

fastboot flash boot boot.img

A few things on this one. First off, you will likely have to flash stock recovery first, as custom recoveries can rarely, if ever, flash OTA updates. Also, if you uninstall system apps, then most likely no, freeze them with Titanium Backup or something instead. After all of that, normally yes.

Basically the OTA has a checklist of "asserts" that it runs before it will procede. If any of these checks fail, it will stop the update. Normally they just check to make sure all the system apps are there, that the files they will be updating are there, that there is enough space, etc. I wrote several guides for the Evo4G and Evo3D to help people upgrade to the latest OTA after rooting, so you didn't have to wipe and flash a new ROM with the update in it.

I'll try to do the same for the LTEvo for you guys.

Yes, that will be great, thanks. I used unrevoked on my Evo to wi-fi tether and supersuser stuff but never took to the custom ROMs since (I know, I'll duck after I type this) I actually like Sense. So what would be great is a simple way to accept OTA updates without having to start from scratch each time and, as always, a step-by-step walk through of the process is greatly appreciated.

Well with the reports I am seeing on multitasking with the new sense, I'm probably going to want to try out CM9 as soon as possible (at least when/if they get the camera working with it) so step by step for the Evo LTE to do that will be huge as well.

You don't need to unlock the bootloader to use wifi tether, just root which will probably be able to be done on day one. I rooted my transformer prime before the bootloader was able to be unlocked. Some people don't need an unlocked device and there are reasons not to if you don't care about flashing roms or care about your warranty.

Also, are the bootloaders encrypted on HTC phones or just locked? If they are not encrypted I am surprised devs don't try to unlock them to full s-off so you don't have to void your warranty or whatever other negatives are associated with htcdev. That's about the only downfall to the whole htcdev thing is that it seems like people give up even trying to unlock these phones properly like in the "old" days.
