I have contributed to science
Now we know where the weakest point on the EVO is..

What happened? Well, I was in a parade, shootin people with squirt guns from the back of a scion, I had my phone in the cupholder behind me, and things were uncomfortable so I leaned back.. *CRUNCH*
For the record, no, it does not turn on. All my storage was on the internal so I lost it all. Google+ uploaded all my pictures though, so that's nice

The loss of your phone sucks for sure, but I'm more interested in you.. Did you get hurt at all?

Re: I have contributed to science
I wonder if slowly bending it back would allow some parts to work enough to pull data off. I don't remember what the tear down looks like to know if it snapped a board in 2 (likely won't work) or if there are semi flexible connections at that point.

Way to be a good sport about it :P

Re: I have contributed to science
You know, when the EVO 4G was first announced I made a point of noting how stupid the kickstand design was, not only in aesthetics but in strength. Specifically, I predicted we would see that stand as a weak point in the EVO. I was roundly criticized, condemned and labelled a fool.
Who's the fool now? Glad I stuck with the GNex.
In all fairness, I must admit that I expected the stand LEG to be the weak point, not the mount-point for it. Still, I'll take credit for being at least partially right, whereas my detractors were totally wrong.

Yes, you were right, it's a weak point WHEN SOMEONE FELL BACK ON IT!!!, I'm going to make the bold prediction that any new, thin smart phone will snap in half if you sit your fat as s on it when it's in a cup holder!

Re: I have contributed to science
Really? At least I can read the OP's post.
He didn't SIT on it. He leaned back into it. Big difference.
I have actually SAT on my GNex. No Damage.
Could I break it? Of course. Am I less likely to break it than the EVO4g? Yep. The kickstand is ugly and weakens the phone.
The only fool here is you. - 07-06-2012, 11:05 AM #15
Re: I have contributed to science
My friend broke his in half like this. He had it in his back pocket and went to go sit down, but pulled himself back up before fully sitting. It bent in half and the screen cracked. Bestbuy insurance replaced it though.
Rule #1.... Do not put in back pocket. - 07-06-2012, 11:08 AM #16

Re: I have contributed to science
*shrug*
My GNex is metal on the inside. (Internal metal frame) Only difference is that the "frame" of the EVO is the monoque shell. Which has a big break in it from the kickstand. As we have seen above, that creates a point of failure.
Reasonable people can disagree on the aesthetics of the red kickstand. That's ultimately a matter of personal taste, and highly subjective. I dislike it. Others may like it. That's fine. To each his or her own.
Regarding it's relative strength vs the "unibody" version, the results above are inarguable. It's weaker and an engineering mistake.
I agree about the name calling though. I didn't start it, but I apologize to the other readers for perpetuating it. - 07-06-2012, 02:16 PM #18
The only only thing in arguable is that the weakest point is indeed at that location on the EVO 4G LTE. It in no way is arguable that it is weaker (or stronger for that matter) than any other phone. And unless you want to contact the OP and have him perform his test again with your Nexus, we never will know.
Inquiring minds want to know? Want to contribute to science too?
LOL

Re: I have contributed to science
If you've actually taken the phone apart, you'd know that kickstand is part of the back cover and not built into the core of the phone and hence does not weaken the phone.
The weakest part of the phone (or any phone for that matter) is where the top of the battery cavity is. The battery itself will provide some structural support, but that "seam," so to speak is the the thinnest part of the phone. The back cover of the phone is so thin that even if it was one piece in this case, it would not been able to protect the phone since it clearly had a very heavy impact.
I'd wager practically any other slab phone in the market would have met it's end in this situation as the back covers are all flimsy metal or plastic that provide no rigidity. - 07-06-2012, 05:40 PM #20

Re: I have contributed to science
I think other people have offered to buy it. If you do choose to go that route id like it for 2 reasons. 1 i work on phones and id like it to experiment on, as in taking it apart. even though its a half bent its still has some teaching value.
THe other is i own an EVO LTE and id like to buy it for the spare battery options.
Feel free to PM me to keep it off the list.

Re: I have contributed to science
Nope, my back is all good. :P
Yes it does! In every direction. It's a big plus.
Haha nah it was just some 4th of July thing.
I never got sad when this one broke, I actually bragged to everyone that I have a phone with a curved screen. The driver of the scion was laughing his **** off.
Actually it bent right at the point between the circuit board and the battery. I'm not going to do anything to it because I don't want to void any warranties. If they let me keep it I might bend it back into place, but maybe I will just put it in a case as a souvenir
..or sell it for parts :P
Thanks
Well it broke on the 4th of July and I got it on the 3rd of June, so I actually missed my chance to buy the warranty from Radio Shack by 1 day. Luckily I know the people there and they pretended nothing happened and sold it anyway. :P
I don't know what Radio Shack plans on doing with it but if they let me keep it, like I said I'll probably just keep it as a souvenir but I might sell it.
Also guys stop picking fights
