Can't play videos taken with HTC EVO LTE

I can get videos off of my HTC EVO LTE phone okay, but I can't seem to find anything that will actually play them. HTC support say so Google "Windows Media Player Essential Codec Pack", install that, and then they will play in Windows Media Player in Windows 7. Well, I downloaded said codec package, and they still don't play. I've also tried UMPlayer in Windows, Banshee and VLC in Ubuntu - nothing will play these videos. Has anyone been able to play these videos off of the phone? This is super frustrating to me - HTC should use an encoder that has standard support on major operating systems out of the box.

I have no problems at all playing the videos under Linux using mplayer or vlc. Totum would not play it because it wanted a codec for AAC.

The AAC audio codec is not going to be included in most Linux distros due to stupid patent crap. Under Mageia, it is in the "tainted" repos.

HTC uses MPEG4 H.264 AVC (Advanced Video Codec) encoding for the videos, which is pretty standard for HD videos. AAC (Advanced Audio Codec) is part of the same H.264 spec, used for audio.

It's odd that VLC Player doesn't work for you, that should work for most formats. Don't know about UMPlayer, never used it, but in Windows, you can try the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.

I've never had a problem playing them with Quicktime.....sometimes WMP plays video but I get no audio unless I use Quicktme
