I am trying to root for the first time using the link below How to flash a ROM and kernel on your HTC Evo 4G - YouTube and nothing is working? i can not get past the two button start up...it just turns on? huh?:'(

Are you holding the volume button down at the same time you hit the power button? Just hold them both at the same time.

pulled the battery and it worked now although I am still not much better than before

If you are on 2.3 your phone is set to do a fastboot. To undo this go to menu>applications and uncheck the fastboot option at the bottom. This keeps the phone from taking forever to start if you just turn it off and you will not be able to get into the HBOOT unless you uncheck that or do a battery pull.
