Re: Guide to rooting phone with HBOOT 2.18.0001
I have gone through the process and everything seemed to work well.
HBOOT shows that I am UNLOCKED
However, it also shows S-ON and when I go to uninstall bloatware I still can not. Which was the driving motivaton to dive into this experiment
As a Noob I am guessing that I somehow need to switch S-ON to S-OFF. How do I do that?
Both Revolutionary and Unrevoked3 are telling me my system is too new.
UNLOCKED but don't know how to root

Unlocking is only the first part of the process. You now have to root.
That requires flashing a custom recovery, and then Superuser, so that you gain root access and can uninstall the bloat. Or, alternatively, you can flash a stock rooted or custom ROM with the boosts already removed.

Re: Guide to rooting phone with HBOOT 2.18.0001
I am trying to root my Evo 4g and am working to get all the software necessary from the HTC Dev site. In the instruction it says to download HTC sync as part of the process but it appears HTC does not have it on their site anymore. Is it somewhere else? A quick google search only shows HTC sync available from a bunch of random pages with none of them appearing too secure. Any ideas or links to the software?

Why do you want S-OFF?
With the unlocked bootloader, you can flash custom ROMs and kernels with a custom recovery. Since you're already on the latest firmware, there really isn't much advantage to being S-OFF unless you really know what you're doing (i.e. you're a power user and aren't afraid of accidentally bricking your device).

Re: Guide to rooting phone with HBOOT 2.18.0001
Please help - I have spent untold hours trying to root my Evo 4g so that I can install wireless tethering. I rooted my older device using unrevoked last year, but apparently the new model is much more complicated.
I am trying to follow the process under "[Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide" using the HTCdev method. In HTCdev, I have made it to step 8, typing in the "fastboot eom get_identifier_token" command, but the text that comes up is not the identifier token. It says:
usage: fastboot [<option>]<command>
commands:
update <filename>... etc, on & on, listing several commands
options:
-w... etc, on & on, listing several options
Any help to get me all the way through as quickly as possible would be so appreciated!
I feel like the process is so nested: "All you have to do is X [just make sure you've already done Y [for which you should know you had to do G [but in order for that to work you really need Q..."! - 04-21-2012, 03:25 PM #85

Re: Guide to rooting phone with HBOOT 2.18.0001
I'm stuck again! My bootloader is unlocked, and now as I to install the custom recovery, am stuck again. I have tried both methods listed in the step-by-step, as well as a method I found on YouTube, and they all fail. Method 1 stops me at "waiting for device" in the command prompt after I enter the command given; Method 2 fails because I installed Android Flasher (or whatever the exact name is) but my computer tells me I need to have another program installed in order to run it, and then it won't let me install that program. The YouTube method - which attempted to get me to load the recovery file directly onto the SD card and then fastboot (i don't know what beyond that) fails when I try to fastboot - I get a message on the white screen of my phone saying "Main version newer! Update failed". Please help me through this. Thanks so much!

For the Fastboot method to work, the device has to be in fastboot mode. That means the white screen with the Androids on skate boards at the bottom. You have to press the power button with the "FASTBOOT" option highlighted, so that it changes from "HBOOT" to "FASTBOOT USB" when connected to your computer. Then you can issue the command to flash the recovery img file, and it should find the device. If that doesn't work, you can put the file from on the root of your SD card, and flash the way you tried in your third method. But my file should work

Re: Guide to rooting phone with HBOOT 2.18.0001
I'm stuck on step 13 - once CWM recovery boots on your phone use the volume up and down to pick Mounts and storage press power to select it
My phone gets to the start screen that says hTC EVO 4G and just hangs there. What did I do wrong?
Thanks. - 04-22-2012, 07:13 PM #92

Re: Guide to rooting phone with HBOOT 2.18.0001
So, my EVO 4G booted up with just pushing the power button this morning, however, I didn't get the prompt for Mounts and storage in Step 13.
So, I pulled the battery and did booted from the recovery and now my EVO is in a power cycle that doesn't seem to be ending any time soon.
I have the battery pulled, what do I do now?
This is what I get after step 11:
sending 'recovery' (3120 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.906s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 1.406s]
finished. total time: 2.313s
Now, I'm in the screen that the menu items are Bootloader, Reboot, REboot Bootloader, Power Down. Which one do I go to? Or should I be in the menu level above this one?
Thanks. - 04-23-2012, 08:51 AM #95Device 1: HTC Supersonic/PC36100 (EVO 4G) | Hardware Version: 0003

Re: Guide to rooting phone with HBOOT 2.18.0001
Well, I am not getting much further on this. I see that I have the bootloader unlocked now and I can hook my phone up to my computer as a disk storage device. I'm not sure on how to:
17. select go back
18.select install zip from sd card
19.choose zip from sd card
Where do I do this step?

Re: Guide to rooting phone with HBOOT 2.18.0001
I'm having the same issue others are:
Follow all steps
Download clockworkmod image
Rename "recovery.img"
Place image i same folder as fastboot files
Navigate to folder in cmd
Paste "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" in cmd
Result is error: cannot load 'recovery.img'
I'm 99% sure I'm doing everything correctly. Can I use some other image to test if it's the file or me? - 04-23-2012, 10:18 PM #99
Re: Guide to rooting phone with HBOOT 2.18.0001
Well, something is really wrong with my phone now. I can't get it to boot up and of course Sprint is no help now that the bootloader was unlocked. I tried relocking it, but they knew it had been done so they just threw their hands up at me and said to call the insurance company since I have total protection.
When I go to the fastboot and it does some little check, I can't tell what it's looking for, but I see that it says the file isn't there or cant' load or something. Says it for like 3 different files.
I need some help here folks. This is my only phone! - 04-24-2012, 12:44 AM #100
Re: Guide to rooting phone with HBOOT 2.18.0001
OK, here is what my screen looks like when I get to the boot menu:
Unlocked
Supersonic EVT2-3 Ship S-ON
HBOOT-2.18.0001
MicroP-041f
Touch Panel-ATMEL224_16ab
Radio-2.15.00.12.19
Dec. 21, 2011, 12:50:32
I get a success message when I flash the recovery.img file.
sending 'recovery' (4004 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.094s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 1.719s]
finished. total time: 2.812s
However, when I go to recovery on my phone and try to boot the phone it goes into an endless restart loop. If I take out the battery and let it sit for a minute I can boot normally, but I don't get the following step:
13.once CWM recovery boots on your phone use the volume up and down to pick Mounts and storage press power to select it
What do I do?!
Thanks.Last edited by cbruhn42; 04-24-2012 at 12:52 AM.
