Default Is the Engadget link to Froyo the real deal?

I downloaded the file but haven't updated yet. It is a manual installation.

    OTA_Supersonic_3.26.651... it is 84.46mb

It is a link to HTC and they said it's the manual download link. So yes it's real.

This would not install for me using Unrevoked 3 root. Might need to do the full root method.

    Just sharing my experience.

the root directory is the "home" of your sd card.just paste it on the home, there is no folder named root.make sure you rename it to update first.

HTC was quoted saying that this isn't final yet.

well the file works, including flash and I don't see anything wrong with it.

    Download the zip.
Rename to update.zip and place in the root of your sdcard.
restart phone and hold volume down + power button.
    Press recovery in the menu
Red exclamation point graphic is shown on screen.
Press volume up + power button to enter recovery mode.
go to the update option to update from sdcard: update.zip
wait for it to finish and don't touch phone

make sure you are plugged in to charger.

It should work after you see the htc evo 4g screen. just hold it until you seen the warning screen

I tried probably 15 times...nothing. I have a custom rom installed, do you think that is causing the problem? Thanks for your help btw

That maybe the case being that this is an official build and like most official updates, if you have custom roms etc it may not work. No problem. Sorry that I didn't respond fast enough.
