Default switching from the pre, question...

i've preordered my Evo at BB and now i'm waiting as patiently as possible... it's tough! anyway, currently i have a palm pre, which i have a love/hate relationship with. my question is, what is the easiest way to get my contacts off the phone and onto my Evo? is there a way i can email a list to myself through a 3rd party app?

I am RIM users for last 2 years. Same as you, i've already pre-ordered EVO 4G at RS. Personally, I just export my contacts to CSV, import to Google, which I used a lot. I believe EVO 4G will do rest. Guess you might ask some help when you got the phone, believe those tech guys in BB who can do something else for helping you on that.

I also have a Palm Pre and pre-ordered the Evo at BB. The rep at BB said they'll be able to transfer my contacts from the Pre to the Evo easily.

my thought on this was because our Palm contacts are held in a cloud, the Evo wouldn't be able to retrieve the contacts... i'd have a back up plan of some sort.

I am told Google Sync will work well for that kind of thing. I certainly hope so anyway since its my main source of contacts, calendar, etc.

Best Buy should be able to transfer the contacts from your Pre to the Evo with no problem. I have a google apps standard account and I use it for my contacts. I would recommend you start using your gmail account for your contacts as well. That way if you ever lose your phone, you won't lose your contacts since they will be stored in the cloud. It also makes it much easier to change devices as you don't have to rely on the store personnel to transfer anything. I have a Pre as well and have pre-ordered my Evo through BB too. Looking forward to June 4th. Good luck!

the thing i don't like about gmails contacts is that it saves every address that i email. isn't that correct? will those addresses transfer to my phone? that would be a pain...

I didn't think it saved every email address.

Do you have Preware installed? I don't have my phone with me right now (forgot it at home), but I believe there's a patch you can install called "Send all contacts via Email." After installing this patch, this option should show up in your Contacts menu.

By default Gmail does save every email address you send an email to. What I recommend doing (and this is posted in the Hero forum section too), is to create a new "all contacts" group that is your "all contacts" versus Googles default contacts. Then you go into the settings on your phone and only sync that group, versus the entire contact list.

Good call, I remember seeing that app when I had the Pre as well (went to the Hero 2 months ago). I never used it because I had started moving over to the gmail contacts. I hate that google knows as much as they do about me, but the services they offer are too good.

I'm switching from the pre to an evo as well. If you use Preware theres a patch you can install that saves all your contacts in a Vcard and sends it to your email.

They should be able to do it at the BB or Radio Shack.

If not, I KNOW they can do it at a Sprint store.

^^ This. Run in, it will then put all of your contacts in a vcard.vcf file and send them via email. Then follow this link:

It states Outlook, but i am sure if you just put in your .vcf file it will work out.

If not.. go here: Load you vcf there and load it into Gmail.

It may or may not transfer everything over, but it is a point in the right direction.

I too have a Pre, and was wondering the same thing. Hope that helps any Pre to Evo owners.

I have a lot more contacts in my phone that my gmail contacts... how do I get them from my phone to google??

    Might be a patch.

My advice, get your contacts on your computer at home as an excel file or in windows contacts.

Using GMail contacts is up to you...i love it and its made my life very easy.....moving forward also if you have GMail contacts you basically never have to worry about syncing your contacts over no matter what platform you use.

Take both phones to Sprint and they will transfer them from the old phone to the new for free.
