EVO not recognizing on computer, only charging.
So, lo and behold I'm sure I'm not the only person with this problem, but I have spent many an hour on trying to solve this problem.
So, upon plugging my HTC EVO 4G into my Windows 7 laptop, it charges. No prompts from my phone, no prompts on my computer. Just charges. I even made sure my phone would ask me, and I ensured USB debugging is on.
It didn't always do this. I don't know what caused it to stop, it just suddenly stopped recognizing.
I tried installing Sync on my laptop, the newest edition mind you, and it didn't help with the recognizing process.
I then checked the Device Manager, and it didn't have anything related to the ADB driver (or phone for that matter) show up.
What could the problem be? Could it be the ADB driver missing that's causing the problem? I am using unrooted Android 2.3.3, and all that other stuff is up to date on my phone.
Much thanks for any time spent trying to solve my problem.
Also, seeing as this is my first post, hi.

Re: EVO not recognizing on computer, only charging.
I have the same problem, though I am sure (at least in my situation) it is from wear and tear on the micro USB connection on the phone... It feels looser and sometimes it even slips and "activates" carmode as well.
Annoying, but if I play with the connection, wiggle, unplug and replug and generally reseat the connection it eventually gets recognized... - 01-04-2012, 01:46 PM

Re: EVO not recognizing on computer, only charging.
Yeah, I've tried messing with it like that, and it hasn't helped. I figure though if it charges, the computer should be able to pick it up too, ya know?
I mean, my EVO is over a year old, and it has faced a good bit of drops and stuff. I don't have a case for it >_>
I'm probably gonna just try to get a replacement because of how beat up it has gotten. The touch screen fails frequently, and I guess the USB connectivity is another thing to add to the problems.
Unless if it is a USB driver issue? - 01-04-2012, 01:57 PM #4
Probably already did this but if not then reboot your laptop. If that doesn't work i would do a factory reset on the evo.

Re: EVO not recognizing on computer, only charging.
My evo just started doing this too. I verified it wasn't the software by booting into recovery and turning on usb drive and the computer didn't even blink or make that sound that it usually makes when it detects a usb device was plugged in.
Tried 2 different cables and two different computers and same thing. I used ADB Wireless to push the latest unrooted original rom back to the sdcard and flashed it and dropped it off at the sprint store for repair. I hate going to those stores because they treat you like your a dumbass and they were sure not to disappoint me today with the well it's charging and make sure you uncheck charge only dumbass response but then i finally got them to plug into a laptop to prove to me that it was working and *gasp* it didnt work.
So i'll wait until the end of the day and pick it up and report back.
I'm curious what they will do to fix it and also curious if anyone has been to sprint for repair on this issue and if so what they did to fix it? Did the problem go away for good or come back?

Re: EVO not recognizing on computer, only charging.
Not for nothing, but I have had this happen to me a with a few different phones(always Evo's oddly), and with every single one of them it was the usb port on the Evo that was not working properly. Two times, the phones we replaced the usb port, and both phones were instantly recognized by the computer. (Btw, all of them did still charge the battery, it was only the data side of the usb that is effected, before the entire port connection will eventually break apart inside).

Re: EVO not recognizing on computer, only charging.
Try pushing down on the phone end of the plug, while its plugged into the phone and the computer. I was having the same problem until i did that and all of a sudden its recognized. However removing the pressure caused it to stop being found. So i got a weight. Hope this helps.

Re: EVO not recognizing on computer, only charging.
I figured I would add my two cents worth. I was having this same issue with my EVO not connecting to the computer, but it was charging. It's getting a bit aged, so I figured the USB port was worn out. The one thing I saw that has not been mentioned here is this: When I plugged my USB cable in, the phone would flash on the screen when viewing the file manager on the computer. Not sure how this helpful, but that's what I was seeing.
However, after trying multiple cables with no luck then trying the Settings>Applications>Development>USB Debugging, I still had no luck connecting the phone to the comuter.
Finally, I followed the advice given above. I pulled the battery and put it back in. What a simple solution. As it turns out, all three cables I have dangling from the computer are perfectly good cables and now I can transfer all the photos off my phone as the battery trick fixed it.
Thanks! - 03-24-2013, 11:09 PM #15
Re: EVO not recognizing on computer, only charging.
Some cheap cables are "charging" cables and do not have the other 2 wires in them or connected. Always try a different USB cable first!

sounds like we haven't found a solution yet... I'm having the same issue with a motorola Droid 4.
