So the new teardown from iFixit revealed the BCM4329 chip which includes 802.11n support. Any ideas how long it will be before this gets enabled, if at all?

Hmmm...interesting, I wonder why it wasn't specced on Sprint. Maybe it's a undocumented feature that may never get unlocked.

I'm guessing it won't be supported. It's like the Nexus One, it has the same chip though the Nexus One doesn't "officially" support the Wireless N or the FM tuner in the chip. At least with the Evo, we'll get the FM tuner.

they got 802.11n working on the N1. my guess is we will just have to wait for someone to do it through root like they did.

Too bad the Evo FM is not HD Radio FM like it is in the Zune :(

Hey, but it's better than no FM like the N1 right :p

Why in the world would they not enable Wireless N in the chipset? Is there something to be gained by leaving the device locked to G? "N" is the newest, and fastest standard...makes no sense.

Eh, I could care less about Wireless N in the Evo, it's not going to make any difference really.

It makes a difference if the router you're trying to connect to doesn't support 802.11b/g, which is how the lack of 802.11n was identified by consumers on the N1. Pretty rare circumstance, but it does make a difference to those consumers.

802.11n is not inherently more power hungry than 802.11g.

I think the reason its not announced as a feature is because to see any real advantage of n over g, you need multiple data streams which translates into multiple antennas. And there probably isn't space to add more than one antenna for Wifi.

The Reason why the Wireless N option is not enabled on the N1 or the Evo 4G is because Android 2.1 does not fully support it, 2.2 on the other hand does, so id imagine we might see Wireless N enabled when 2.2 hits possibly.

Awesome! This was the only thing that was really missing from the Evo for me. Hopefully FroYo or rooting will enable "n". I need good WiFi range to reach my garage.
