Great phone but poor quality display
I am so happy that I did not use my upgrade on EVO. The screen color depth looks so poor compared to my Palm Pre so I did some research and it only supports 16bit 65K colors. The Pre supports 16.7 million 24 bit true color. Why did they make such a ice phone and add such a poor quality display? I mean the phone can display HD but only on a 16bit screen? Who does that.
When I compared webpages on my Pre compared to the EVO it was night and day. Pre is crisp, sharp with excellent colors. The EVO looked washed out and bland. - 06-07-2010, 11:44 PM #2
The pre also lags more. Case closed

the pre is a great phone especially with the dev community. I love the amount of things i can change with it(overclock 800Mhz, hotspot, patches, battery lasted a couple of days once) but i gotta admit that the evo is a piece of work lol.
Played with one at the Sprint store for an hour and I liked it. The phone isnt that big and I could hardly tell the difference between the palm screen and evo screen in regards to the 16/24bit amount. But that may be because im not that particular with it. Im gonna upgrade to the Evo when my upgrade comes next month if no hpalm device is announced by then. - 06-07-2010, 11:57 PM

I have both of them right here and that's how I noticed the evo wasn't 24bit. If you really think the evo that can only display 65k colors looks sharper and more vibrant than a pre that can display 16.7 million colors then you are in denial. I am saving my upgrade for something with 24 bit screen. Could be webos or android does not matter.

Got the Pre the first day it came out. I'm pretty excited that I ditched it for the Evo. Webos is actually a pretty awesome OS, but Android has a lot more apps, and hardware between the two phones isn't really comparable. You can have your screen, I'll take it the speed.

Watch HD quality movies on a 3+ inch screen? Who does that LOL. Thats why the evo has HDMI out!

watch any movies on a 16bit screen and youtube hd ? Who does that? Even the htc hero had an 18bit screen. Htc made an awesome device with a blackberry type screen.

If you're going to troll at least bait with a device people might give a **** about like the iphone. The pre was a total joke.

the iphone also has a 24 bit screen and so does the motorola droid and not some washed out display that cannot display accurate colors. That should be the standard. Even my creative mp3 player from 5 years ago has 18bit color

Yes, the Pre has a 24 bit screen, however, many people like myself cant really notice a difference in color depth but we notice a major increase in screen size. Which to me is way more important. Not to mention the screen on my Pre was so scratched up after a year that I could have been watching Avatar in HD on it and it still would have looked like crap. Yes that was my fault for not putting a protector on it, but viewing ANYTHING on the giant screen of the EVO is so much more enjoyable for me that I really dont mind {or even notice} the lower color depth.

Screen on Evo looks awesome to me, not sure why you are saying it's not good.
I was watching some high def feeds on youtube via wifi and looks stunning. - 06-08-2010, 01:24 AM #15

I'll be honest, I don't see color all that well, lol. However, as much as I like my Pre, the screen on the Evo is much better because of the size. The pre's screen was great, but I always had it turned pretty much all the way down so that I could maximize what, for me, was pretty poor battery life. The colors didn't look so great with the screen darkish. With the Evo, I'm getting much better battery life while using it more, since I can surf the web and view content much more comfortably. I also keep the ambient light sensor on, rather than keeping the screen on the lowest setting. It's funny that the OP picked the first thing that most anyone would say the EVO has over the Pre.

If you're really worried about a 4 inch screen, go buy an Iphone4 then. At least thats all it really has going for it.

ok come on now - first of all the Palm Pre is not a "total joke"
it is a beautiful little phone that should have gotten a LOT more recognition than it did.
second, if this guy is a "troll" he is the most polite troll in the history of the internet.
Come on people - if you're so eSheltered that you think anyone that posts something with which you disagree is trolling, perhaps you should take a little trip outside of these forums and head over to 4chan, fark or something awful.
honestly.... - 06-08-2010, 02:18 AM #20
just don't drop your pre...and if you think you're gonna see a new webos device in the next 6 to 8 months...that my friend is a pipedream!!!!

I absolutely love my EVO but put it side by side with an incredible or a moment and the colors will seem washed out in comparison, but is not noticeable unless side by side so to me I'm not worried about it.

I would like all 3 of you to follow the forum rules. The OP is not trolling, whining, or smoking weed, just because he's stating his opinion about how the 2 screens look side by side. Trolling is one thing, flaming is another. Please knock it off or move along.

OK, we get it Diemos. You don't like the screen, and you aren't going to buy an Evo. We're happy for you. You've made your point, now go away. Anyone who cares already knows how you feel. Repeating it over and over won't change the screen, nor how anyone feels about it.
BTW, the 64K color issue was well documented. It's a limitation of Android 2.1, not the EVO, and not HTC's fault. Most of us already knew about it.Last edited by meyerweb; 06-08-2010 at 07:31 AM.
