Front Camera App?
Hey guys, quick question.
I am debating to get the Evo, and I have a question about the front camera app. Is it like th iPhone 4 where you can only do it Evo to Evo, or would I be able to use it on my MSN messenger with my friends on there also or would I need to use a special chat program like fring?
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: Front Camera App?
So far programs like MSN and Yahoo messengers do not support video chat yet. For now the only program for video chat is Qik since skype pulled support for all other 3rd party programs like fring

So the only way to use the camera in the front for video calling is to use Qik, and that means it would have to be with someone with a Evo also? Correct?

Re: Front Camera App?
Unfortunately yes but I'm sure it won't be long before someone makes another app similar to skype.... Or skype gives access back.

But fring will work with the front camera on the Evo correct?
Do you have the Evo? I'm still debating if I want to give up my Blackberry for the Evo :S - 07-19-2010, 03:17 PM #8

The benefit of Skype is that so many people already use it, including home PC users. I used to be able to Skype my wife (via Fring) when she was at home on the laptop and I was out with my Evo, but now we can't do that. It won't be long before there are universal options again, but it's hard waiting for something when it could really be useful.

Yeah I think I am going to get an extra battery to carry just incase. Luckily I am usually in places where I can charge my phone (home & work), and then gym and school which I'm sure it wont' die that quick.
Also, please check your inbox! Thanks! - 07-19-2010, 03:42 PM #16
What is the advantage of BBM over text messaging?
Other than the occasional problem of texts not sent in real-time.
Oh, and I'm ignoring the fact that SMS requires a plan or has a cost. I'm just considering the feature. The reason why I ask this is because a friend of mine says, "I can't give up BBM" but then she texts me all the time. I don't understand why it's any easier for her to reach other friends, when texting someone functionally works out to be the same thing.
Not to derail the conversation, I don't think front-camera or no front-camera is going to be your biggest concern when moving to an Android phone from a Blackberry.
#1 - It's just a matter of time before a slew of apps will be available for video chat via your popular programs, Skype, Gchat, etc. I don't know if the iPhone front-facing camera will get the same 3rd party support from Apple/AT&T. Then again, maybe it's too early to tell.
#2 - I think on a day-to-day basis, the front-facing camera is just icing on the cake. I think you should consider your next phone more on the apps, usability, and all that jazz. It's like buying a car because the radio is cool. You should make sure you can drive it where you need to first before comparing radios.Last edited by npark; 07-19-2010 at 03:47 PM.

You can chat with any phone that has Qik or Fring. I video chat from my EVO with friends who have iphone 4's all the time.

One more thing, is there a way to hide apps on the main screen?

Everything on the launcher screens, such as app icons/shortcuts, widgets (calendar, clock, little applets on the launcher screens), are completely customizable. You can add, remove, modify settings--or even find completely different ones on the Market.
For example, I no longer use the Gmail icon. I use a widget called, "Gmail unread count" which I like much better because it shows the number of unread email on the customizable Gmail shortcut looking widget.
Anywho, welcome to Android. Far more customizable than BB, iPhone, and webOS. Like I was saying earlier, this transition to all the Android goodness will probably concern you more than the front camera... =) - 07-20-2010, 02:27 PM

Another thing.
Should I join Sprint and get the Evo, or should I get Verizon and get the Droid X?!
Thanks!
